CHOCOLATE PROCESSORS' FORUM, organized by Davao City Agriculturist's Office, was held in UP Mindanao on 26 May with the participation of some 66 stakeholders.
City Administrator Zuleika Lopez, in her message read by City Agriculturist OIC Leuterio, underscored agriculture and food security as being among the ten priority sectors of the "Biyaheng DO30" program of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte. She expressed confidence that the goal for "Davao City as the Chocolate Capital of the Philippines" could be achieved with consultation, planning, and implementation by the stakeholders.
Chancellor Concepcion, in her Welcome Remarks, shared a vision for the Philippines to be positioned in the world chocolate market. OIC Leuterio, in his Opening Remarks, described the competitive advantage and gaps in the Davao City cacao industry.
Mr. Valente Turtur, Chairman of the National Cacao Industry Council presented the Philippine Cacao Industry Road Map, interspersed with his observations on current practices by cacao growers and processors and the dynamics of the local industry and international markets.
Mr. Semil Tuason of Casco Cacao Co. shared their cacao bean post-harvest and processing technologies, doubled-with a presentation on the process of making artisanal chocolate.
City Councilor Marissa Abella, Chairperson of the City Council Committee on Agriculture, gave her message of support on behalf of the Committee. Cacao grower and award-winning chocolate producer Rosario Puentespina gave an inspirational message to the plenary and introduced her production manager as UP Mindanao BS Food Technology alumna Jenna Mae San Luis.
Chocolate products by Forum participants were on display in the venue. Workshops on farm operations and chocolate production were held in the afternoon, enriched with the active participation of the UP Mindanao Dept. of Food Science and Chemistry and the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office.
