Art works of Davao life, 2017

Original paintings and prints from visual artist Teody Boylie "Bong" Perez are on public display in selected restaurants in Davao City throughout the month of March. According to the exhibit organizer Lynda Buenaobra, "Davao City life and icons are reflected in these depictions of landscapes, culture, and its residents. This is in line with our objectives to uphold appreciation for local life, patronage for local art, and contribute to the month-long celebration of the 80th Araw ng Dabaw. We wish to show the public this body of work that has earned this artist a Datu Bago Award, the highest award bestowed by Davao City for its citizens."

The certified prints and original paintings may be viewed or purchased in Balik Bukid restaurant in Quimpo Boulevard and Saging Repablik restaurant in Tionko Avenue. The exhibit is organized by the UP Mindanao Technology Transfer and Business Development Office on behalf of the artist, who is a faculty member of the UP Mindanao College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

22nd Anniversary, 2017

The University of the Philippines Mindanao will celebrate its 22nd Foundation Anniversary in February 2017. The month-long celebration will kick off on February 1 with a ceremonial opening ceremony. This will be followed at 1:00 PM by a book-launch for the publication "Mapping Sago: Anthropological, Biophysical, and Economic Aspects" at Lorenzo Hall, UP Mindanao Administration Bldg., Mintal, Davao City.

Upcoming highlights of the month-long celebration will be the inauguration of several university facilities, a tribute to outgoing UP President Alfredo Pascual, as well as recognition of personnel and honor students.

The School of Management will lead the activities on 6-11 February (SOM Week), the activities on 13-18 February will be led by the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM Week), while the activities organized by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will be held on 21-25 February (CHSS Week).

The Elias B. Lopez Hall Dormitory has organized several activities for students, both dormitory residents and non-residents alike. The UP Alumni Association Davao Chapter (UPAA Davao) will organize a forum on socially relevant current issues. The month-long celebration will be capped by student activities spearheaded by the University Student Council.

UP Mindanao is the only Constituent University (CU) of the University of the Philippines System in the island of Mindanao.

UPDATE #1: The Opening Ceremony for the 22nd Anniversary Month-Long Celebration was held on 01 February at the UP Mindanao Oblation Plaza. Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion narrated the beginnings of UP Mindanao for the benefit of students. The Dance Ensemble performed a patriotic-themed dance. The three deans--Dominica Dacera, Stella Salazar, and Larry Digal--and Student Council Chairperson Neil Pindoy planted flags at points around the Plaza.

Koro Kantahanay sang their performance piece from the UP Gawad Pangulo Choral Competition. The Chancellor shared her Koro experience at the Gawad Pangulo event. The Sounding of the Gong was done by VC Antonio Obsioma, with VC Nilo Oponda and Chancellor Concepcion. The Anniversary Committee were the first patrons to avail of the anniversary photo-wall. January Public Affairs, 2017

January in UP Mindanao serves as prelude to its 22nd Anniversary in February. The 2nd Semester of Academic Year 2016-2017 began on 16 January. The classes in the re-opened degree program in Urban and Regional Planning begins on 21 January. 

The publication "Banwa Monograph Series 1: Mapping Sago" was released by the Office of Research. The Monograph contains 11 articles with Associate Professor Myfel D. Paluga (Dept. of Social Sciences) as Editor. Read the details here.

The Land Reservation project titled "Economic Upliftment of the Indigenous People's Community through Agricultural Projects" was selected as one of the awardees of the UP System's "Gawad Pangulo: Award for Excellence in Public Service". Land Reservations Officer Joel N. Sagadal, the project proponent, will represent UP Mindanao in the awarding ceremony on 30 January in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

In extension and public service, the Communicators Guild will hold "Pamamahayag: A Seminar-Workshop on Campus Journalism" for public high school students of Marahan and Marilog High Schools (Davao City) on 23 January. Read the details here.   

In operations, an ISO 9001:2015 GQMSS Requirements and Documentation Seminar will be held on 25-27 January at the University Library. This is in compliance to Executive Order No. 605, the Government Quality Management Program (GQMP).

In research, 17 research papers will be presented in the "In-House Review 2017 of All UP Mindanao-Funded Research" on 30 January. An external panel of experts will hear and give feedback. 

Also on 30 January is the Inter-School Statistics Quiz organized by the Society of Math Majors in the University Atrium.

In faculty development, Instructor Mylene P. Arcena (Dept. of Food Sci. and Chem.) departed in January 2017 to avail of a scholarship to the University of Otago, New Zealand.            

In alumni affairs, the UP Mindanao BA Social Science Class of 2002--represented by Ms. Diocy Cloribel-Guilabtan, Mr. Jayneil Ancheta, and Dr. Ava Patricia Avila-Goldman--donated textbooks to the University Library on 6 January. See the photo here.

The UP Alumni Association Davao held elections for directors on 7 January. A total of 11 directors were elected, completing the board comprising of 18 seats. Read the details and see some photos here.

Urban and Regional Planning program open, 2016

The offering of Masters and Diploma courses on Urban and Regional Planning have been re-opened, now under the Department of Architecture. The entrance examinations were held on December 3 and interviews are scheduled on December 17.  Classes start in January 2017. The fields of specialization are: Environmental and Natural Resources Planning; Public Works Planning; Transportation Planning; and Estate Planning. Some 19 applicants applied, most of whom held positions in municipal planning offices in Mindanao. The program was offered previously under the School of Management until it was put on hold due to shortage of program faculty. With the strengthening of the Architecture faculty complement this department has acquired the necessary expertise to deliver this degree program that is very much in demand in the region.

College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) emerged as Overall Champion in the 2016 Dula university intramurals held in the week of 17-21 October. CSM earned a total of 5800 points to edge out Administrative Services who came in at 2nd place with 5500 points. College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) was in 3rd place with 5000 points. School of Management (SOM) was in 4th place with 4500 points.
