Davao Writers Workshop held May 3 - 7

 The Davao Writers Guild, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the University of the Philippines Mindanao, is holding the second Davao Writers Workshop on May 3-7, 2010 at Lispher Inn, Matina. Panelists include well-known and prizewinning writers Macario Tiu, Timothy Montes, and Ricardo de Ungria. Also in the panel are Genevieve Quintero, Satur Apoyon, and guest Anthony Tan from MSU-IIT. The fellows include Ella Ismael, Freeda Ko, Freidreich Layno, Erika Navaja, Arvin Ortiz, James Pascual, Seneca Pellano, and Reymond Pepito, all from Davao . The fellows from out-of-town are Gino Dolorzo and Jayson Parba from Cagayan de Oro, Hiyasmin Espejo from General Santos, and Iryne Kaamino from Ozamis City. They submitted fiction, poems, essays, and plays in English and Cebuano, which will be subjected to the critical eyes and scrutiny of the panelists throughout the week. According to Workshop Director Jhoanna Lynn Cruz, the sessions are open to the public. Anyone who is interested in learning the basics of creative writing can sit in. Each day's sessions are opened with a craft lecture by a panelist at 9 a.m., with an open forum. In particular, the sessions on May 4 are devoted to discussion of poetry in Cebuano, with a lecture by Satur Apoyon. The workshop will culminate on May 7 with a poetry reading and performances by the fellows at 7:30 p.m. Highlighting the event is the launching of the much-awaited reprint of Davao Harvest 1, the first anthology of Davao literature edited by Tita Lacambra-Ayala and the late Alfrredo Salanga. Call for Papers for BANWA Journal

Banwa is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal published biannually by the University of the Philippines Mindanao. The journal is devoted to promoting scholarship and insightful debate by publishing a broad range of critical and scholarly articles, research reports, reviews, short notes, lectures, policy statements, and advocacies across the various disciplines, written by both emerging and established scholars, local and international. This special issue of Banwa on IP and area studies of the greater Davao region is open to any current studies on societies, histories, and cultures of the area. Deadline and Paper Requirements: Original papers not previously published elsewhere, except in a preliminary form, or are not being considered for publication anywhere may be submitted to the journal. Following the format and the order of presentation, the article should be about 5,000 words or 20 pages, inclusive of photos, graphs, tables, and illustrations. Paper should include (1) a 150- to 200-word abstract, (2) a list of 8 keywords maximum, and (3) a list of abbreviations used in the article. Although each discipline has its own requirements for the presentation of the data, the following sequence is suggested for the body: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgment, Notes, and References. Application to Summer Bridge Program now open

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) of UP Mindanao is once again offering a Summer Bridge Program (SBP) to selected incoming freshmen for SY 2010-2011( please click to check if you are qualified list_of_sbp_qualifiers.xls ). The program aims to close the gap between the qualifiers' high school exit skills and UP entry requirements. It will offer non-credit courses in Mathematics, English, Chemistry, and Physics.  A short psychosocial program will also be organized to help students adjust more easily to their academic environment at UP. Other supplementary activities such as study skills and basic computer application  training workshops will also be integrated into the course. The program will be held from April 12 to May 21, 2010 at UP Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City. However, participants are expected on the afternoon of April 11, Sunday, at the Elias B. Lopez Hall Dormitory (EBL), where they are required to stay for free for the duration of the program. Documents required to be submitted are: 1.    Parents’ 2009 Income Tax Return; 2.    Completed Reply Form and Waiver Form  to be sent not later than April 5, 2010 (please click here for the forms  reply_waiver.doc ). The LRC strongly encourages you to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Registration is free. UPMin offers waitlist for interested applicants

UP Mindanao is inviting all UPCAT qualifiers and non-qualifiers to apply in the waitlist for UP Mindanao in order to avail of a UP education in the region. UPCAT qualifiers who were accepted by other UP constituent universities but prefer to study in the region for economic reasons can apply as a waitlisted applicant in UP Mindanao. In addition, UPCAT non-qualifiers who got a University Predicted Grade (UPG) of 2.8000 or better in the UPCAT are also invited to apply as waitlisted in UP Mindanao. The University Predicted Grade (UPG) is included in the written notice that is sent to each UPCAT applicant. Interested parties may call the Office of the University Registrar at tel. no. (082)293-0201 or send e-mail to <>. UP Mindanao is the only UP constituent university located in Mindanao. It offers undergraduate degree programs in Anthropology, Architecture, Communication Arts, English (Creative Writing), Applied Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Food Technology, Agribusiness Economics and a graduate degree program in Management. UP education is made available in the region with P600.00/unit rate and a miscellaneous fee of P1,640.00/semester for undergraduate programs. Several scholarships and financial assistance programs are also available. There is no increase in tuition or other related fees for undergraduate programs for 2010.

Prof Jhoanna Cruz holds book launch of “Women Loving”

UP-Mindanao Professor Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz will be the featured author in a book launch to be held at National Book Store at SM City Davao on Saturday, December 12. The book titled “Women Loving” is a collection of short stories and a play. It is published by De La Salle University and Anvil Publications, Inc. The book launch will be held at 3:00 P.M. with guest of honor Dr. Isagani R. Cruz of DLSU Academic Publications Office. Visitors at the book launch will be entitled to a 10% discount off the suggested retail price of the book. According to Prof. Cruz, “The book is a collection mostly about women loving other women and is the first of its kind in the Philippines ”. The play included in the book won 2nd place in the Carlos Palanca Literary Awards, full-length play in English in 1999. Prof. Cruz has also won 3rd place in the 2008 Palanca Awards for Essay in English. Professor Cruz is a faculty member of the UP-Mindanao Department of Humanities where she teaches creative writing.
