The UP Mindanao Phil-LiDAR 2 research program held its 5th Map Turn-over Ceremony and Resource Mapping Forum in Davao City on May 30. Some 11 local government units from Region 11 received sets of agricultural, forest, coastal and bio-mass resource maps from the research program.

Davao City Councilor and Council Agriculture Committee Chairperson Marissa Abella, who graced the Forum, received a set of Davao City maps from Project Leader Prof. Annabelle Novero and UP Mindanao Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion.

Maps were turned over to representatives of General Santos City, the municipalities of Alabel and Glan of Sarangani Province, Pantukan, Maco, and Mawab of Compostela Valley Province, and Asuncion, Kapalong, New Corella, and Sto. Tomas of Davao del Norte Province.

In the Forum, Prof. Novero described the UP Mindanao program as part of a nation-wide program directed by the Dept. of Science and Technology, and project scientists presented how LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) gathered and processed geographical data.

Councilor Abella called the map turn-over "timely for the Davao City Agricultural and Fisheries Development Plan", a sentiment echoed by Maribeth Kasten of GenSan City, "for our own Comprehensive Land Use Plan". Chancellor Concepcion described the program as "taxpayers' money well spent", while DOST-11 Asst. Director Elsie  Solidum called it "a contribution to science-based approaches to decision-making".
