Journalism Workshop, 2017

A BASIC JOURNALISM SKILLS WORKSHOP was given by UP Mindanao on 29-30 May for teachers of selected public high schools in the Third District of Davao City. The workshop was carried out by the UP Mindanao Office of Extension and Community Service in partnership with the Dept. of Humanities. The objectives were for the capability-building of secondary schools through knowledge dissemination and technical assistance by the University as part of its mandate to provide public service.

Campus journalism being the activity of collecting and organizing news carried out to meet the needs of the studentry, the workshop topics were: conceptualizing the school paper; gathering data, particularly doing interviews; writing news articles; writing opinion pieces e.g. columns and editorials; taking photos and creating editorial cartoons; revising, editing, and proofreading; layout; printing press work. 

The schools who availed of the Workshop were Mintal Comprehensive National High School, Talandang NHS, Tambobong NHS, Mulig NHS, Baguio National School of Arts and Trades, Baracatan NHS, Biao NHS, Dacudao NHS, Elias B. Lopez Memorial HS, Marahan NHS, Don Enrique Bustamante NHS, Sirib NHS, Sto. Nino NHS, and Marilog NHS.

The Workshop resource persons were faculty members Asst. Prof. Antonino de Veyra and Instructor Khurshid Kalabud Jr. OECs Director Michael Gatela and Associate Diocy Guilabtan provided the logistical initiative. Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Nilo Oponda gave the Welcome Remarks and Dept. of Humanities Chairperson John Bengan gave the Closing Remarks.
