The University of the Philippines Mindanao (UP-Mindanao) Swim Team earned their places in the Davao Region team after emerging as overall champion in swim events in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Selection held in Mati City. The SCUAA was held to select athletes to represent Davao Region in the National SCUAA Meet to be held on 20-24 February in Batangas.
The 7-person-strong UP Mindanao Swim Team, under Coach Albert Ramos (Dept. of Human Kinetics), raked in 33 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals across different swim events.
The UP Mindanao rookie delegation--participating for the first time in the Regional SCUAA--also claimed second place and five silver medals in Women's Futsal (indoor football) under coach Krishna Balaga, and second place with three silver medals in Women's Beach Volleyball under coach Jezreel Abarca, with the Table Tennis and Chess teams completing the delegation headed by Prof. Armando Salazar.
Consequently, the Davao Region Swim Team will be composed of 5 women, namely UP-Mindanao's Bhazel Acac (BS Food Tech.), Dominique Epie (BS Agribusiness Economics), Kathrine Hintay (BS Architecture), Angelica Jem Verga (BSA), and Paula Yap (BS Computer Sci.) and 5 men, namely UP-Mindanao's Joemer Aliman (BS Applied Math.) and Juan Mendoza (BS Agribus. Econ.), with Elthon Buhay, John Cuyos, and Carlo Nazareno. Coach Ramos was selected as head coach.
Also selected to represent Davao Region were UP-Mindanao volleyball players Junissa Consuegra (BS Biology), Hannah Ricci Baronia (BS Food Tech.), and Kimberly Joy Uy ((BSFT), and table tennis player Deborah Naciongayo (BS Computer Sci.).
Coach Ramos proclaimed, "It’s Time for UP-Minda-NOW! This is our slogan to describe the increasing and progressive presence of the University in the field of sports beyond the local scene".
The SCUAA Regional Selection was held on 25-28 January with the participation of the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST), Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST), Compostela Valley State College (CVSC), University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), Davao Del Norte State College (DNSC), and UP Mindanao.
