The University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents approved the appointment of School of Management Dean Larry N. Digal as the 5th Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Mindanao for the term 1 March 2019 to 28 February 2022. He will succeed the incumbent chancellor, Prof. Sylvia Concepcion.
Dean Digal in his nomination documents articulated his top agenda items dubbed as UPMin REAPS which stands for: Reinforce (R) teaching-research-extension-production continuum through better understanding of the needs of the industry and other stakeholders and more responsive UP Mindanao products and services (academic programs, research and extension/public services); Enhance (E) existing undergraduate and graduate programs and to develop at least two new graduate programs; Accelerate (A) research productivity; Prime (P) and improve organizational capacity and administrative efficiency; Strengthen (S) programs to develop a culture of teamwork, sense of community, health and wellness, and better appreciation of the arts. He outlined the programs under REAPS that will help UPMin prioritize and focus to maximize its impact given its limited resources to its stakeholders and the development of Mindanao and the country.
Dean Digal joined UP Mindanao in June 2001 and served as Dean of SOM in January 2004 to March 2007 and for a second term on 28 July 2016 to the present. Dean Digal also holds an appointment as UP Scientist I for three consecutive terms since 2011. He was the top graduate of the College of Agriculture of UPLB in 1985 where he finished his BS Agriculture degree major in Agricultural Economics, cum laude. He earned his MS in Agricultural Economics in Purdue University (Indiana, USA), and his PhD in Agricultural Economics in University of Sydney.
