Assoc. Prof. Jhoanna Cruz (Humanities) served as Philippine representative to the 2017 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival on 25-29 October in Bali, Republic of Indonesia. Touchdown Magazine reported "the Philippines' own Jhoanna Lynn Cruz will be presenting alongside Indonesian luminaries such as octogenarian feminist novelist NH Dini and international names like best-selling crime writer Ian Rankin".
On 27 October, Prof. Cruz performed a literary reading at Seniman Coffee Studio at Tony Raka.On 28 October, she served in the panel on ASEAN literature where she reported that despite the tough topic the conversations and the differing perspectives made the discussion enjoyable. She shared the panel with Bernice Chauly, Marc Nair, and Leila S. Chudhori with Intan Paramaditha as Moderator. Also on 28 October, Prof. Cruz served on the panel on writing fiction together with Veronica Stigger of Brazil that was moderated by Tenzin Dickie of Tibet. According to Prof. Cruz the audience was very engaged with the discussion.
She found time to meet Ian Rankin and renew ties with colleague Jennifer Mackenzie. Prof. Cruz said the Ubud 2017 experience made her "fired up to write more because.., it matters".
