The 2018 Phil. Association of State Universities and Colleges-State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (PASUC-SCUAA) National Games was held in Antique on 18-24 February 2018, and was attended by thousands of athletes and trainers from some 102 Philippine state colleges and universities. The UP Mindanao delegation of athletes to the Games, headed by Varsity Coordinator Prof. Armando Salazar, were deployed to the Davao Region teams for swimming, futsal (indoor football), chess, volleyball, and badminton.
At the end, the Varsity swimmers and their coach won a total of 8 medals and a 2nd runner-up trophy, as part of the Davao Region Swim Team. Swimmer Juan Antonio Mendoza (BS Agribusiness Economics) won 5 medals: 1 bronze, in the 50m Butterfly; 2 silvers, in the 200m IM and in the 50m Freestyle; and 2 golds, in the 100m and in the 200m Freestyle events, where he bested his previous time records. Swimmer Bhazel Acac (BS Food Technology) won two bronze medals, in the 400m IM and in the 100m Butterfly events. Coach Vasit Venturillo was awarded a bronze medal in the best coach category.
The team received a trophy for 3rd place (a.k.a. 2nd runner-up) for overall ranking in Men’s Swimming, while achieving 4th overall ranking among all regional teams for combined men and women in swimming; based on the combined group effort, placings, and equivalent points of the rest of the swim team comprised of UP-Mindanao swimmers Dominique Epie (BSABE), Kathryn Hintay (BS Architecture), Angelica Jem Verga (BSA), and Paula Yap (BS Computer Science), with team members from other Davao SUCs.
The Davao Women’s Volleyball team, among whose members includes Varsity First Striker Junissa Consuegra (BS Biology), was able to enter the quarterfinals after beating ARMM (3 sets), Region 12 (3 sets), and Region 4 (5 sets). Ms. Consuegra was able to provide essential kills during the games, but the team eventually fell away from the top 3 spot after succumbing to a well-fought and convincing 5-set, 14-16 score, game against Region 8.
Badminton player Sharyz Dane Cabalhin delivered a good individual performance, as she was able to win her single games against Region 5 and 7, although the team was not able to best the rest of the teams in the bracket.
Chess players Cherrie Lopez (BSABE), and Shenna Malnegro (BSA) were able to contribute to the Davao Region team’s Swiss-system score of 6 points (12th place), securing a victory against Region 5, but bowing to match-ups against Region 1, 4, and 7.
The Futsal team was able to gain early ground into the bracket-placing with a commanding 3-0 win against Region 8 but suffered a 0-5 defeat against Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR). A third game with defending champion Region 3--which would determine their fate in the quarterfinals--was intensely fought but was ultimately lost. (By: Albert Francis Reginald T. Ramos, UP Mindanao)
