Monsanto Philippines Inc. held a symposium in U.P. Mindanao on 20 August titled "Monsanto and the Work We Do". Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion welcomed the visitors at the Lorenzo Hall venue with a roll-call of the academic programs represented. Most were from the BS Biology, BS Food Technology, and BS Agribusiness Economics programs. Assoc. Prof. Nilo Oponda, Academic Affairs Officer-in-charge, gave a perspective on the forum and introduced the resource persons.  Ms. Charina Garrido-Ocampo, Monsanto Corporate Affairs Lead, began with a talk on the Monsanto mission and vision and dispelled some of the "myths" propagated about the company. Dr. Gabriel Romero, Regulatory Affairs Lead, gave a talk on their science titled, "Monsanto and Sustainable Agriculture", where he echoed the words of their chief executive officer, "We succeed when farmers succeed". He detailed the benefits from the genetically-modified corn, maize, and practices in agriculture, and the testimonials from Filipino farmers. Ms. Cherie Lou Ocampo, Human Resources Lead, spoke of careers that directly help to improve Filipino lives through sustainable agriculture. The students showed their knowledge of biology and genetics in the open forum and continued to engage the visiting resource persons even after the forum.
