The Kasadya committee sent the message, "Let us all make this year's celebration more meaningful by bringing your gifts for the affected children of recent earthquakes in Makilala."

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR MAKILALA CHILDREN

University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao personnel delivered Christmas cheer to children displaced by the Mindanao earthquakes on 7 December 2019 in an evacuation center in Makilala, Cotabato province. The team was received by Makilala Mayor Armando Quibod, local alumni and officials. Boys and girls sang songs and chanted cheers in the big tent facilitated by instructor Julius Neil Piala. Some 300 children received loot bags with snacks, gift bags with toys, and prizes of coloring books from the UP Mindanao team. In addition, the team turned over 52 solar-powered lamps to the evacuation center officials. In parting, UP Mindanao chancellor Larry Digal gave a Christmas message to the residents for equality in compassion. The gift-giving originated from the UP Mindanao Pahinungod call on 8 November for donations for residents displaced by the earthquakes. The UP Mindanao community reinforced this call with gifts donated on 4 December in the Kasadya Christmas celebration on the theme “Paglaum ug kahayag taliwala sa katalagman, dungan natong isaulog karong kapaskuhan.”

The Christmas offering contributed to the mix of UP's multi-disciplinary response to the affected province, ranging from scientific to psycho-social services.
Upon departure from the site, the UP Mindanao team welcomed the return of a team from the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences led by director Mario Aurelio who arrived to undertake further scientific studies.

(UPMFI) and UP Mindanao, in cooperation with the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) national and Davao chapter, organized the 44th UP Regional Alumni Institute (RAI) held on 22-23 November 2019 at Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City. The RAI theme was “Attaining inclusive and sustainable development in Mindanao through investment in UP Mindanao’s programs.”

In his message, UP Alumni Association president and alumni regent Reynaldo Laserna recalled the alumni’s efforts towards the establishment of UP Mindanao. In turn, UP president Danilo Concepcion offered his vision for UP Mindanao: “Ano po ba ang balak natin sa Mindanao? Nahulí man ang Mindanao sa pagkakalikha nito―pang anim ata siya na campus na ating naitatag outside Diliman―ay sisiguruhin natin na ang UP Mindanao ay hahabol sa development at baka nga malampasan pa ng UP Mindanao ang ilan pang mga CU na naunang itinatag sa kanya.”

UP Mindanao chancellor Larry Digal presented UP Mindanao’s strategic plan, which focuses on three strategic themes: Molding Learners into Leaders, Transforming Insights into Impacts, and Building a Campus into a Community. These themes are translated into big-ticket projects by the university such as expanded academic offerings and the creation of the College of Human Kinetics, the College of Medicine, and the College of Engineering; strengthening R&D in the two  streams of Mindanao arts and cultures and sustainable agri- and biosystems and the application of knowledge generated to public service and intellectual property utilization; and physical expansion of UP Mindanao’s campus into a “green university town” through the completion of the Davao City-UP Sports Complex and the establishment of a botanical garden, museums, and a science and technology park, just to name a few.

Philippine senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, Davao City congressman Isidro Ungab, and Department of Science and Technology secretary Fortunato de la Peña, representing President Rodrigo Duterte, led the legislative and executive branches of government in pledging their support to the expansion plan.

Other invited speakers to the RAI included UPAA director Robert Aranton, Department of Agriculture undersecretary Rodolfo Vicerra, former presidential adviser on the peace process Atty. Earthquake response, 2019

Written by Rene Estremera. Posted in Announcements

The University of the Philippines (UP) combined its expertise in earth and health sciences and quick public service with a unified response within a week after the Mindanao earthquakes of October 2019.  Three strong earthquakes occurred on 16, 29, and 31 October with magnitudes of 6.3, 6.6 and 6.5, respectively. The province of North Cotabato was hardest hit with 21,110 houses destroyed, 15 roads and bridges damaged, and several other infrastructures similarly affected. The social welfare department website reported 24,000 displaced persons were in evacuation centers with another 7,465 outside evacuation centers, with a total of 188,533 affected persons.

In the aftermath of the earthquakes, UP executive vice president Teodoro Herbosa announced that UP Foundation, Inc. will receive donations from members of the UP community who expressed their willingness to help. Local donors can pay to Union Bank of the Philippines-Commonwealth branch, savings account no. 102270018964, and donors from abroad may pay to Philippine National Bank-UP Campus branch, savings account no. 108660029835, with PNB Swift Code: PNBmPHmm.

The UP Mindanao Pahinungod also announced its donation drive for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. Donations will be accepted through the UP Strategic Research and Management Foundation with address at School of Management Building, UP Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City, with tel. no. (+63 82)295-2188. Donations may be deposited to Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC)-CM Recto, Davao City Branch, Account No. 1522601256 with Swift code RBCPHMM. Further inquiries may be directed to UP Mindanao Pahinungod through 09196398805 (Smart), 09451076756 or 09674194345 (Globe/TM), or by private message to https://www.facebook.com/upmindanao.pahinungod.

UP executive vice president Teodoro Herbosa immediately created the Mindanao Earthquake Response Team of UP, composed of UP NOAH and the UP Resilience Institute (UP RI), both focused on disaster risk reduction, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod volunteer  service unit, the UP Manila Pahinungod with its force of health workers, vice president for finance Joselito Florendo, with VP for public affairs Elena Pernia as chair. UP Mindanao chancellor Larry Digal created a counterpart UP Mindanao Task Force to coordinate the UP movements in the region. The Task Force initiated a donation drive and sent volunteers to help repack relief goods in a partner government agency.

On 8 November the first UP team of geologists led by NOAH executive director Alfredo Mahar Lagmay accompanied by RI director Genaro Cuaresma and the UP Mindanao Task Force arrived in remote Sitio Flortam, Barangay Batasan in hard-hit Makilala municipality. “There was something about the collapsed lane in the highway and the cracks in the landscape in Sitio Flortam that made Dr. Lagmay stop to take measurements and take aerial photos using a drone,” said UP Mindanao Task Force chair Michael Gatela. “We suspect that there may be a new and undiscovered fault line parallel to the known Makilala fault, but we still have to do further studies,” said Dr. Cuaresma.

While in the site, the UP Mindanao team established relations with the community by meeting the residents and delivering some donations in the presence of the sitio leader.

At the Office of the Provincial Governor in Kidapawan City, the team shared the initial satellite data showing the ground changes with Acting Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza and Acting Vice Governor Shirlyn Macasarte-Villanueva, who had previously written UP president Danilo Concepcion, to request structural and geological assessments, and psychosocial support for trauma victims.

Over the next two days the UP group inspected barangays Kisante, Batasan, Buenavida, Sto. Niño, Buhay and Malasila, and took a helicopter fly-by over Bgy. Bato, all in Makilala. Before departing, they shared assessments with the Incident Management Team and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs) team and acting vice-governor Villanueva.
“Four barangays in Makilala suffered 100% damage,” said Dr. Cuaresma. “Resettlement is the only prospect for those families whose homesites are now uninhabitable,” he said.

=====

In the weekend of 9 November, a second geology team led by Dr. Mario Aurelio arrived to replace the first team, and a UP College of Engineering group arrived and conducted detailed assessments of buildings in the disaster area.

The following week, a shipment of special tents from the SOS Attitude international relief NGO arrived in Davao City consigned to UP, for which the UP Mindanao Task Force made a quick visit to Makilala and identified an evacuation site in Barangay Poblacion with 295 multi-cultural families of Muslims, Manobos, and migrants to be the beneficiaries. Volunteers from UP Mindanao and its alumni, UP Vanguard, the League of Provinces, Bureau of Fire Protection, Rotary Clubs and Rotaracts in Kidapawan were identified to help set up the tent camp in the coming weeks.

A third UP group composed of medical doctors from UP Manila and psychologists from UP Manila and UP Visayas arrived on-site on 20 November. Chancellor Digal mentioned the possible need for UP Mindanao volunteer interpreters, since psycho-social and medical interventions involve personal interaction.

Meanwhile, local musicians, including some alumni, composed and recorded a motivational song and initiated a donation drive that culminated in a charity concert “Usá ka bundákan para sa mga naíg-an,” (“A simultaneous drop/hit for the hard-hit”) on 16 November 2019 in Davao City.

UP breaks into top 500 in world rankings, 2019

Written by Rene Estremera. Posted in Announcements

London-based magazine Times Higher Education (THE) has placed the University of the Philippines in the world’s top 500 universities and fourth in the ASEAN region, according to the 2020 THE World University Rankings. The national university is listed in the 401-500 group of 1,396 ranked research universities.

This is UP’s fourth year in the rankings. It was included for the first time in 2017 among the top 1,000. The succeeding rankings showed marked improvement for UP as it climbed to the top 800 in the 2018 edition and to the top 600 for 2019.

THE assesses research-intensive universities based on 13 performance indicators in five pillars: teaching (30 percent), research (30 percent), research influence/citations (30 percent), international outlook (7.5 percent) and industry income (2.5 percent).

For 2020, UP has been ranked 159th in citations which places it in the top 11 percent of prestigious universities that have “influence in spreading new knowledge and ideas.” Its score in citations went up from last year’s 69.1 to 86.9. As indicator of research influence, 'citations' refers to the average number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally. This year, THE's bibliometric data supplier Elsevier examined 77.4 million citations to 12.8 million journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, books and book chapters published over five years. The data include more than 23,400 academic journals indexed by Elsevier’s Scopus database and all indexed publications between 2014 and 2018. Citations to these publications made in the six years from 2014 to 2019 are also collected.

UP also scored better in teaching (from 21.7 to 24.1), research (from 16.4 to 17.2) and industry income (from 35.8 to 39.4). A global academic reputation survey partly determines the scores for teaching and research.UP, however, slipped in international outlook, with its score down from 39.5 to 37.9. International outlook considers the number of international students and staff as well as international collaboration.Only two universities from the Philippines appeared in the latest table. UP is still the leading university in the country.

THE publishes some of the most influential rankings used by the global academic community which include the Asia University Rankings, Asia-Pacific University Rankings, Emerging Economies University Rankings,  World University Rankings by Subject and Impact Rankings.
