Various UPMin mid-level and senior officials are being trained in coaching to expand the pool of personnel to take on leadership roles.

The UPMin administration welcomed the coaching approach as appropriate for the co-creation of a positive work environment among colleagues. The coaching approach can accommodate assessments or an appreciation of leadership practices that contribute to a preferred workplace. This, in turn, helps create a transformative work or education environment envisioned by Chancellor Lyre Murao.

Licensed management coaches from Haraya Coaching are facilitating the coaching sessions.

"We shall not train you. Instead, we coach you for you to access the best in you," said Transformational Coach Maria Lea Uy-Ungson.

"We shall draw out your capabilities, gifts, talents, and wisdom from you," said Leadership Coach Jacqueline Fe Luy.

A total of 44 UPMin officials were trained from July to October 2023. These were UPMin's central administrators, college deans and secretaries, department chairpersons, academic program coordinators, key committee members, and research project leaders.

"It's not your typical leadership training," said a participant. "Drills, workshops, and situational cases are provided. The leader may take time to listen, reflect, and seek validation of one's understanding. Situational factors and personal attributes can better inform a leader's action or decision," they said.

This training helped UPMin's middle and higher-level leaders exercise their capabilities to influence organizational culture practices toward the shared vision, values, and strategies.

The training outcomes on the UPMin leaders are expected to address the Sustainable Development Goals of quality education, gender equality, and related goals.

The UP Charter has mandated UP units to maintain and enhance academic excellence and lead in setting academic standards. Toward these ends, innovations in the delivery of its teaching, research, creative work, administration, and public service functions are expected of UP officials.

To strengthen the fight against rabies and enhance rabies control efforts in Davao City, the UPMin RabDash DC project conducted the "Rabies Dashboard Users' Training 2.0," the next phase of its project, on October 2, 2023, at the City Health Office. This training session introduced and demonstrated the enhanced functionalities of the Rabies Analytics Dashboard, or RabDash, to City Veterinarian's Office (CVO) personnel and enumerators.

RabDash, an innovative project, is funded by the DOST-Phil. Council for Health R&D, which commenced on September 1, 2022, is a collaborative initiative between the Davao CVO and the Philippine Genome Center - Mindanao, with UP Mindanao serving as the Implementing Agency.

47 participants from CVO and their satellite offices received hands-on guidance on navigating the system effectively.

The primary goals of the training were:

Presentation of the Enhanced Dashboard: To showcase the newly integrated features and enhancements of the rabies analytics dashboard, facilitating better data management and decision-making for rabies control.

Feedback and Improvement: To gather valuable insights, questions, concerns, and comments from CVO personnel, enabling further refinement and optimization of the dashboard based on real-world usage and feedback.

Rabies remains a significant public health concern in many areas, and initiatives like the RabDash DC project are crucial in the collective effort to control and ultimately eliminate this deadly disease. Davao City takes a significant step towards achieving its rabies control objectives by equipping CVO personnel with the tools and knowledge to utilize the rabies analytics dashboard.

Chancellor Lyre Murao led the opening of the Outdoor Gym after the Flag-Raising Ceremony on October 2, 2023. A total of ten pairs of gym equipment were opened for the use of the UPMin students and staff. The Outdoor Gym is located on the University Library grounds and is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“Health and wellness are very important in achieving a sense of community here in the university. This outdoor gym will help us build that community,” said Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao.

“As good citizens, we are responsible for our well-being, and exercise can extend our lives,” said Assistant Professor Armando Salazar. "Studies show that exercising outdoors is comparatively more beneficial than exercising indoors. It reduces stress while complementing a sedentary lifestyle. This outdoor equipment is like a toy designed as if you are playing while improving your total fitness and becoming closer to nature. As “Lingkod Bayan,” I believe we are responsible for caring for our health," he said.

The Outdoor Gym is an initiative of the Department of Human Kinetics. University Librarian Briccio Merced Jr. offered the University Library grounds as location. The Human Resource Development Office and the Office of Student Affairs co-organized the launch event.
