"Knowledge is the resource that needs to be shared. By sharing knowledge with other people, it grows more. As 'Iskolar ng Bayan,' we are mandated to contribute to the body of knowledge through research and even inspire others to create knowledge." Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero gave these remarks at the opening of the UP Mindanao Research Colloquium of in-house funded research, held on February 27, 2024, in the UP Mindanao Office of Research complex.
Asst. Prof. Miko Mariz C. Castro of the School of Management opened the forum with a video recording of her research. She showed the increased vegetable consumption in her study "Association of food intakes with Social Amelioration Program (SAP) among low-income adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Maragusan, Davao de Oro."
Asst. Prof. Kim Dianne Ligue-Sabio of the Dept. of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science disclosed the "Spatiotemporal patterns and risk factors of the 2020-2021 African Swine Fever" as experienced in the Davao Region. She acknowledged the presence of her team members, Dr. Jasper Elvin Mijares, DVM, and BS Biology thesis student Mark Frederick Lacaba.
Asst. Prof. Kim Dianne Ligue-Sabio of the Dept. of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science disclosed the "Spatiotemporal patterns and risk factors of the 2020-2021 African Swine Fever" as experienced in the Davao Region.
Mr. Santos and Prof. Ligue-Sabio accommodated questions from the audience in the morning open forum.
In the afternoon session, Asst. Prof. Myrafe S. Ylagan of the Dept. of Architecture, in another video recording, discussed her paper, "Assessing the accessibility and social dimension extent to define the role of the urban waterfront public open spaces," especially since Davao City is also a waterfront city.
Asst. Prof. Minerva C. Rosel, also of the Dept. of Architecture, shared, "Assessing the resilience of urban dwellers and exploring the application of urban design principles towards sustainable communities for Poblacion District, Davao City."
Instructor Von Carlo de la Torre disclosed how barangay roads and national roads influence biodiversity in "Roadside diversity and distribution of anurans and birds in urban ecosystems in Davao City."
Both Prof. Rosel and Instructor de la Torre likewise provided additional input in the open forum, such as how each could build on the other researcher's study.
In her closing remarks, Research Director Prof. May Anne Mata emphasized her observation that the research presentations shared common themes of equity and inclusivity and the importance of sustainability and the environment. She noted that the 2024 Colloquium is the first such post-pandemic event and thanked the Office of Research support team.
The research presentations address a number of the Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education, No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and others.
