UPMin is top Biology and Environmental Science HEI in Davao Region

The EduRank organization placed UP Mindanao in the number one rank among Higher Education Institutions in the Davao Region for Biology and Environmental Science. This ranking was contained in the 2024 February report of EduRank, an independent organization based in Lebanon that evaluates higher education institutions worldwide. The same report placed UP Mindanao's Biology and Environmental Science in the 22nd and 25th ranks, respectively, nationwide. Globally, UP Mindanao was ranked in the 5743rd and 5711th place, respectively, in these disciplines.  

The UP Mindanao Department of Biological Science and Environmental Studies (DBSEs) disclosed these rankings on their social media page. According to the DBSES, the rankings are a product of their pioneering research. The DBSES reported 210 publications and 1,909 citations in Biology and 214 publications with 1,639 citations in Environmental Science. Through the disciplines of Biology and Environmental Science, the DBSES demonstrates its unwavering commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing relevant issues in the region and beyond.

These endeavors address the Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, Life on Land, Life below Water, Climate Action, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and others.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero gave these remarks at the opening of the UP Mindanao Research Colloquium of in-house funded research, held on February 27, 2024, in the UP Mindanao Office of Research complex.

UP Mindanao presented its leading R&D projects before a visiting Asian Development Bank (ADB) team on January 20, 2024, in response to the ADB's call for proposals for "Promoting Research and Innovation to Strengthen Transformation of Industries and Enterprises (PRISTINE)."

"Innovation is one of our key pillars in UP Mindanao...we need to build an innovation ecosystem, and we in UP Mindanao have started to build that ecosystem," said UPMin Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao in her welcome message.

Key projects presented included the UPMin Technology Business Incubator, focusing on impact-driven startups in the Davao Region, presented by Asst. Prof. Miguel Guillermo. Dr. Melvin Pasaporte presented the "Knowledge, Innovation, Science, and Technology (KIST) Park" and the "UP Mindanao Lactic Acid Technology Commercialization Roadmap." Assoc. Prof. Dann Marie del Mundo introduced the "Food Processing Pilot Plant" for value-added food products, and Ms. Ediflor Yanong outlined the therapeutic and diagnostic kit plans of the Phil. Genome Center Mindanao.

The ADB team of Fook Yen Chong, Vishal Aditya Potluri, Jose Tiusongco II, Samuel Ang King Wee, Shaun Welbourne-Wood, Arndt Husar, and Yashpal Malik, gave incisive questions and feedback. Ms. AJ Gabriel represented the DTI in the forum.

Among the UPMin partners who engaged in networking and shared insights were private sector partners from Marsman Drysdale Agribusiness Group, Belvis Farms, Rosario's Delicacies, Phil. Agri-Ventures Corp., ICT Davao, and the public sector partners Southern Philippines Medical Center, DOST, DICT, DTI, and the UP System team of Aubrey Diane Francisco and Jose Emmanuel Reverente.

The UPMin efforts address the Sustainable Development Goals of poverty alleviation, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, economic growth, industry, and innovation, among others.

Associate Professor Dennis John F. Sumaylo (Department of Humanities) shared photos from the highlights of his book launch for the book "Engaging Isolated Communities in Disaster Preparation and Communication in the Philippines," held at the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia, on December 6, 2023. 

Prof. Sumaylo took his PhD in Media and Communication at the RMIT University in Australia. In UP Mindanao, he teaches Crisis Communication, Communication Planning, Business Communication, Research in Communication, Voice and Diction, and Theater Communication. He is also a Resource Person for workshops in Communication Planning, Crisis Communication, Technical Writing, Theater, Journalism, Documentary Photography. He does consultancy work as Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Specialist.
