UPAA-Greater Chicago scholars graduate, 2015

Ms. Evelyn Kalaw-Espina of the UP Alumni Association-Greater Chicago visited UP Mindanao once again on April 17 to meet the UPAA-GC scholars who are now graduating students. Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion welcomed Ms. Espina and her husband Francisco. The scholars were presented in the presence of the chancellor and the Office of Student Affairs director Asst. Prof. Ana Raissa Trinidad and scholarships officer Ms. Analiza Fulvadora. Ms. Abbie Glenn Estribillo, graduating student of BS Food Technology, is from Digos City, whose thesis is "Influence of Bruising on Postharvest Characteristics of Two Cultivars of Tomato". Yunace Dataganon, a graduating student of BS Agribusiness Economics, is from Davao city, and her thesis is, "Assessing the Condition and Employment Pattern Among Selected Agrarian Reform Cooperatives in the Banana Industry". The UPAA-GC had awarded Thirty Thousand US Dollars for scholarships to UP Mindanao through Ms. Espina and Ms. Grace Villamora in January 2011. Ms. Espina hoped that the report from this occasion will generate more scholarships from the UPAA-GC.                

Davao Today donates "State of Fear" book, 2015

Ms. Zea Io Ming Correa-Capistrano (BA Communication Arts 2005), Business Manager of Davao Today Inc., delivered a donation in the form of copies of the book "State of Fear, Reportage on human rights in Mindanao during the Arroyo and Aquino regimes" to UP Mindanao, through Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion. The complimentary copies are being distributed to Davao City universities and colleges for the education of students. She said the publication is the first book published by Davao Today, which also creates multi-media productions and publishes on the world-wide web, and that the donation is part of Davao Today's 10th-year anniversary commemoration. Chancellor Concepcion thanked them for the donation and pledged that the books will be made available at the UP Mindanao University Library's Main Library and its college outlets.

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association-Central California (UPAA-CC) recently sent a donation of 17 books to the UP Mindanao BS Computer Science Program. According to Prof. Vic Calag, "We want to thank the UP Alumni Association Central California, particularly UPAACC President Dr. John Alibay and Mr. August Lansigan, for the 17 books that they donated for the BS Computer Science Program of UP Mindanao. The BSCS program is privileged to once again be a recipient of a donation from the UPAA-CC.  Our program previously received a donation from the UPAA-CC in the form of one computer unit with an operating system almost 10 years ago". In the list furnished by Prof. Calag, the donation is composed of recent editions of 17 textbooks with the following titles: "Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications", "Structured Computer Organization", "Problem Solving and Program Design in C", "Feature Extraction & Image Processing for Computer Vision", "Mining The Social Web: Data Mining Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, Github, and more", "Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques", "Digital Evidence And Computer Crime: Forensic Science, Computer and the Internet", "Professional: Android 4 Application Development", "Fundamentals of Computer Graphics", "Introduction to Android Application Development: Android Essentials", "Numerical Methods", "Programming Computer Vision with Python", "Discrete Mathematics and its Application", "Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science", "Data Smart: Using Data Science to Transform Information into Insight", "The Essential Guide To: Digital Signal Processing", "Learning PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS & HTML5". The BSCS program was awarded by the Commission on Higher Education with an appointment as Center of Development in 2007.

Davao Doctors College donate to UP Tacloban

Davao Doctors College constituents donated a total of P301,832.15 in cash as assistance for UP Tacloban which they coursed through the University of the Philippines Mindanao. The cash was composed contributions raised from seven separate donation drives within the DDC: from the faculty, the alumni, the student council, the Clarion student publication, the Physical Therapy Dept., the extension and administrative services, and the Davao Doctors College itself. DDC President Miguel Soledad led the delegation on November 25, 2013 which was received by UP Mindanao Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion. The donations from their respective sectors were turned over by DDC Faculty Union Pres. Owin A. Ferolino, DDC Alumni Association Pres. Ralph Augustus Manaois, DDC Student Council representative Karla Mae C. Esquierdo, Clarion student publication representative Jann Julia M. Dadivas, Extension and Administrative Services Dir. Angelica L. Torres, and Vice-Pres. for Academic Affairs Ma. Leah F. Villano.

UP Visayas Tacloban students welcome to UPMin

MEMO PAEP 13-36To ensure continuity of students’ education this semester despite their condition, students from UP Visayas-Tacloban campus are welcome to cross-enroll in UP Mindanao. UP Mindanao will waive all requirements for cross-enrollment to address the emergency situation. Host-families who can accommodate these cross-enrollee students will be sought out and identified by UP Mindanao officials. To communicate this offer, the University is calling on the traditional media and social media practitioners to relay this message to students of UP Visayas-Tacloban campus. Interested parties may contact Prof. Erwin Protacio at 0928-494-0132 or 0933-495-7630. This message was reiterated by UP President Alfredo Pascual in his Memorandum No. PAEP 13-36
