Libreng sakay 1

The University administration provided Libreng Sakay to university personnel, students, and their parents on February 20-24, 2023. This service was sponsored by alumni and provided by the regular UP Ikot multicabs. Libreng Sakay was available from the highway to campus at the start and end of class hours, and within the campus in between. Libreng Sakay was further extended from February 27 to March 2, 2023. The service extension period was sponsored by UPMin's BS Biology and former faculty members.

Libreng Sakay is among the welfare services which the alumni are supporting. Adopt-A-Scholar is another program that seeks donors for meals, transportation, and housing support for students.

ASEAN Junior Chamber (“Jaycee”) Senator Gene Tan of Singapore (third from left in photo above) donated cash for a student in distress during an informal campus visit on September 30, 2022. UP Mindanao Foundation chairperson and Jaycee senator Sebastian Angliongto (left) brought Tan on a spontaneous campus visit on the occasion of Mr. Tan’s stopover in Davao City.  Chancellor Lyre Murao (second from left) and vice-chancellors Annabelle Novero (fourth from left) and Leo Estaña received the visitors and were later joined by student affairs director Maria Stella Salazar (right) with a draft brochure describing assistance programs for students in need. While the visitors browsed through the brochure, director Salazar said that a student would be leaving the university for good for being unable to maintain funds needed for sustenance. Instantly, Mr. Tan handed over US currency for the sustenance of the student. In a later message to Mr. Angliongto, Jaycee senator Tan said, “I was deprived of continual tertiary education and spent seven years pursuing night classes to catch up. The confluence of events when you brought me to UPMin was timed that this student should not be deprived of earning a degree.”

A total of 103 school children received school supplies on August 31, 2022, from the Oplan Tulong-Dunong donation drive of UP Mindanao’s Land Reservation Management Office (LRMO). The school children of Sta. Emelia Elementary School in the UP Laak (Davao de Oro) Land Reservation and Datu Ladayon Elementary School in the UP Marilog (Davao City) Land Reservation benefited from the donations. The LRMO launched Oplan Tulong-Dunong to prepare the schoolchildren in the UP land reservations for the start of classes in August and ease their parents’ burden of procuring school supplies.  The LRMO called for writing notebooks for Kindergarten and Grades 1 & 2, composition notebooks for Grades 3, 4, & 5, and intermediate pad paper for Grades 1 to 6. Donations of colored crayons, pencils and erasers, ballpens, pencil sharpeners, and plastic envelopes were also solicited. Cash donations were accepted, as well. The LRMO chief Joel Sagadal thanked the 17 identified donors and the other donors who gave donations through a drop box. Mr. Sagadal said the Tulong Dunong will continue as there remain underserved school children in the sites. In addition, sports equipment such as balls will be solicited.

The UP Land Reservations were identified for UP Mindanao’s research, extension, instruction, and development activities through Presidential Proclamation 1252 (for Laak) and PP 1253 (for Marilog) signed by President Fidel V. Ramos on June 15, 1998.
