Scientist and DOST AMCen Showcase Advanced Manufacturing
Dr. Rigoberto Advincula of the University of Tennessee–Knoxville disclosed the endless possibilities of three-dimensional (3-D) printing in his talk "Materials, Artificial Intelligence, and Advanced Manufacturing" at Lemito Hall, UP Mindanao, on July 23, 2024. This talk is the first installment of the Office of Research's Visiting Experts Lecture Series.
He emphasized the importance of translating research and engineering solutions and using AI, machine learning, and advanced tools in modern manufacturing. His user-inspired basic research projects involved 3D printing and advanced manufacturing using nanomaterials and nanocomposites, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, metal oxides, and nitrocellulose.
"The science of today is the technology of tomorrow," he said. He illustrated the transfer of science and engineering to innovation as a bridge originating from science and education, crossing the divide through the platforms of Applied Research and Development, Industrialization of Technologies, and Product Development until the crossing is completed to land in marketing, sales, and customers, and market success.
DOST's Engr. Jozal Carrido then introduced the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen), which aims to establish a National Additive Manufacturing Center to help sustain the Philippines' global competitiveness.
With AMCen being second only to Singapore in the global position of advanced manufacturing facilities in Southeast Asia, AMCen aims to provide technical training services and curriculum development for undergraduates, graduate students, and industry professionals, along with establishing one satellite laboratory per region in collaboration with DOST regional offices and state universities.
After the talks, Prof. Advincula met with Chancellor Murao, Balik-Scientist Edwin Tecarro of the University of Houston–Downtown, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero, Research Director May Anne Mata, and UP Mindanao scientists to discuss options for collaboration and exchange regarding the planned KIST Park.
