The UP Mindanao administration entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Pilipinas Special Olympics Inc. (SO Pilipinas) for a proactive and constructive partnership for inclusive sports.

UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and SO Pilipinas Program Director Kaye Chastine Samson, representing National President Gillian Akiko Thomson-Guevara, signed on behalf of their respective organizations in a ceremony held at the Davao City-UP Sports Complex on August 28, 2024.

UP Mindanao Department of Human Kinetics chairperson Asst. Prof. Jezreel Abarca signed as a witness to the memorandum in the presence of former chair Asst. Prof. Erwin Protacio.

Ms. Samson was accompanied by Bocce Coach Ethel Tan and SO Pilipinas athlete and Davao City resident Omar Tuazon.

The UP Charter identifies sports as an effective venue for youth leadership development, which is aligned with the memorandum. Both parties agreed to provide support and expertise to each other in organizing, managing, and events, programs, and activities related to sports, leadership, and more, with no requirement for annual fees.

UP Mindanao will allow the establishment of local clubs on campus to address the unique needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities in the field of sports and related fields, subject to existing university rules. SO Pilipinas, on their part, will provide training opportunities and professional development in inclusive sports for all ages, and opportunities for player, coach, and referee development.

The two parties agreed to organize an inclusive sports event, such as an orientation on inclusive sports and disability sensitivity, before the year ends.

The MOU addresses UP Mindanao's Mindanao Sports Development Institute, GAD and safe spaces development on campus, and public service for Mindanao. It likewise addresses UP's flagship program of partnerships for public service. It also addresses the sustainable development goals of good health and well-being, quality education, and gender equality.
