Deadline of application for UP College Admission Test 2020

 Grade 12 students who wish to study in the University of the Philippines (UP) in 2020 are now advised to apply for the UP College Admission Test 2020 (UPCAT 2020). Tuition is free in UP and admission requires qualification through the UPCAT. 
 
 
The deadlines for application for UPCAT 2020 are on 2 August 2019 for Regional Public High Schools; 9 August 2019 for Private High Schools; 16 August 2019 for Metro Manila Public High Schools; 23 August 2019 for Metro Manila Private High Schools. Applications received after 23 August will be processed only if test permits are still available. 
 
 
 
The minimum requirements for UPCAT 2020 are the following: 
 
•Senior high school student expecting to graduate before SY 2020-2021 from a DepEd-accredited high school or an accredited secondary school abroad; OR
•Graduate of a DepEd- accredited high school or accredited secondary school abroad; AND
•Must have final grades for three (3) high school years preceding the year of graduation;
•Must not have taken any college subject/s prior to taking the UPCAT; AND
•Must not have taken the UPCAT before.
 
All applicants must apply online through https://upcatonline.up.edu.ph.  
 
UPCAT applicants must prepare four (4) recent and identical 2X2 photographs; fully-accomplished UPCAT Form 1-Personal Data Sheet; and UPCAT Form 2-High School Record to be filled-up by the school administrator.

ARCHITECTURE GRADUATES PASS BOARD EXAM, 4 JULY 2019

The Professional Regulation Commission released the results of the June 2019 Architect Licensure Exam four days after the end of the exams on 30 June. Some 2,104 passed from among the 3,172 takers, or equivalent to 66%. UP Mindanao's BS Architecture graduates again achieved a 100%-passing rate in the June 2019 Examination with 14 passers. BS FOOD TECHNOLOGY THESES AWARDED, 12 JULY 
 
Ms. Ella Angelique M. Bucoya (BS Food Technology 2019, cum laude) and faculty adviser Prof. NGV Fundador won 1st Prize in the 2019 Philippine Association of Food Technologists Undergraduate Research Competition held on 12 July 2019 in Quezon City, for her work on the research entitled, "Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using mangosteen pericarp extract and evaluation of their antimicrobial properties." 
 
Ms. Pete Maverick Nicole Estudillo (BSFT 2019, summa cum laude) was awarded 1st prize for her poster and 2nd prize for her oral presentation of her thesis "Anti-oxidant and anti-cancer potential of artocarpus fruit wastes" in the Food and Nutrition Research Institute. Prof. Joel Hassan G. Tolentino served as her thesis adviser.

VISIT OF NEW ACIAR AGRIBUSINESS RESEARCH MANAGER, 15 JULY 
 
Mr. Howard Hall, the new Research Program Manager for Agribusiness of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), and ACIAR Country Ms. Mai Alagcan visited UP Mindanao on 15 July 2019. The ACIAR team was received by Chancellor Larry Digal, research director Dr. Emma Ruth Bayogan, former project proponents Dr. Sylvia Concepcion and Ms. Roxanne Aguinaldo, and ACIAR alumni coordinator and ICAEM conference organizer Ms. Marilou Montiflor. The UP Mindanao team gave a briefing for the ACIAR team on the long-standing ACIAR-UP Mindanao research partnership, particularly in the areas of vegetable and mango value chains, including the experiences and lessons learned in linking smallholder farmers and the private sector. The preparations for the upcoming 9th International Conference on Agribusiness, Economics and Management (ICAEM) that is co-funded by ACIAR, was also shared with Mr. Hall. The ACIAR is a partner of the Australian Government’s aid program in the Philippines to promote prosperity, reduce poverty, enhance stability, and to help respond to the Philippines’ agricultural research and development priorities. 
 
TUKLAS LUNAS MANUALS LAUNCHED, 17 JULY
 
The Tuklas Lunas® Protocols for Drug Discovery and Development Manuals were presented in a book-launch on 17 July 2019, during the celebration of the 2019 National Science and Technology Week at the World Trade Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila. This is the final output of the “Standard protocols for drug discovery and development Research project” under Dr. Rita Grace Alvero of Pharmalytics Corporation as the project leader and Dr. Amelia P. Guevara as the editor. The seven manuals produced were a collaborative effort of the researchers/experts involved in the Drug Discovery and Development Program of DOST-PCHRD. The team of Dr. Aleyla E. De Cadiz and Mr. Adrian Almeria of the UP Mindanao Department of Biological Science and Environmental Studies wrote the SOP Guidelines on the “Collection and Processing of Terrestrial Plant Samples for Drug Discovery and Development” under the Manual 1: Collection and Extraction of Biosources and Purification of Bioactives.

FUMIGATION TO PREVENT DENGUE, 20 JULY
 
The Health Services Section of the Office of Student Affairs, in coordination with the City Health Office, will conduct a fumigation/fogging in the UP Mindanao campus buildings and grounds on 20 July 2019 to control the spread of dengue disease. University constituents are advised to vacate the areas on the said day.    
 
BIOPLASTIC GLOBAL SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM, 23 July 2019
 
UP Mindanao will host the "Bioplastic Global Satellite Symposium" on 23 July 2019. This is part of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Core to Core Program “Japan-Southeast Asia Collaboration Hub of Bioplastic Study” that started in 2017, a three-year program funded by the JSPS. The program aims to establish linkages on bioplastic-related research between Japan and South-East Asian countries namely Malaysia, Indonesia Thailand, and the Philippines. Participating institutions of this program are Osaka University, The University of Tokyo, Riken, Hokkaido University, Gunma University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Nagoya University, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Chulalongkorn University, Indonesian Institute of Sciences-(LIPI) and University of the Philippines. In 2017, a kick-off symposium was held at Osaka University and a satellite symposium at the University of Tokyo. The following year the symposium was held at the Universiti Sains Malaysia. TEACHING EFFECTIVE NESS WORKSHOP, 23-24 JULY
 
A Teaching Effectiveness Workshop was conducted by the Interactive Learning Center on 23-24 July 2019. Prof. Roja Rivera and Prof. Maria Rowena Raymundo of UP Open University served as resource persons. The workshop was interactive and the teaching staff was participative.         
 
MASTER IN MGT. BRIDGE PROGRAM, 24-25 JULY
 
The Master of Management program conducted a two-day Bridge Program for incoming MM students. General information was provided by MM program coordinator Asst. Prof. Glory Dee Romo, Registrar John Bengan, College Secretary Vlademir Shuck, and Librarian Briccio Merced. Special topics were discussed by assistant professors Glory Dee Romo, Aurelia Luzviminda Gomez, Roxanne Aguinaldo, Lemuel Calatrava, Thaddeus Acuna, Exegesis Jedidiah Ebarle, and Dean Pedro Alviola IV.    
 
HAWKER PRIZE FOR SOUTHEAST ASIAN POETRY, 25 JULY
 
Alumnus Jeffrey B. Javier [BA English, Creative Writing] was awarded 2nd Place in the 2019 Hawker Prize for Southeast Asian Poetry in an announcement published online on 25 July 2019. Javier was awarded for his poem “Mama Was Reciting from the Book of Revelation.” Read the poem here: http://bit.ly/2GuOVD7. Jeffrey was a First Prize Winner in the "Reconciliation" Poetry Contest of Cha: An Asian Literary Journal in 2014 for his poem "Blackout." His poems have been published in local and international publications and on-line journals. He was a fellow of the Silliman University National Writers Workshop and the Iligan Writers Workshop. He is currently taking MA in Creative Writing in UP Diliman.  He is a member of the Davao Writers Guild and has been designated Workshop Director for the Davao Writers Workshop in November 2019.
 
3rd DAVAO CITY-WIDE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DRILL, 26 JULY 2019

ENACTUS IDEA CHALLENGE, 27 July 2019 
 
A mobile game proposal by a team of UP Mindanao students was selected as one of five national finalists in the Enactus Business Innovation Idea Challenge. BS Computer Science seniors Paula Ann Gabrielle I. Yap, Mia Wednesday Faith B. Tom, and Jeselle Kimberly M. Carriedo were selected for their proposal entitled, "Mobile Rabies, Bye Bye." The team described their proposal as a game for mobile phones that is designed for rabies control and eradication. The idea originated from a call for proposals from the S.T.O.P. Rabies research program of UP Mindanao. Asst. Prof. Miguel Carlo Guillermo of the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science and Mr. Albert Francis Reginald Ramos of the Department of Human Kinetics are the team advisers. The team will present their proposal in oral presentations in the grand finals to be held at the SMX convention Center in Pasay City on 27 July 2019.
 
RESEARCH PLANNING WORKSHOP, 29 JULY
 
A research Planning workshop on the theme "Shaping the Future of Research, Development, and Engagement (RDE) in Mindanao: Setting our Agenda for the Next Five Years" was organized by the newly-constituted Center for the Advancement of Research, Development, and Engagement in Mindanao (CARIM) for UP Mindanao researchers and faculty members. Chancellor Larry Digal gave the welcome remarks and an inspirational message wherein he enjoined everyone to do research in teams by invoking his experiences in the banana research and other projects. CARIM Director Emma Ruth Bayogan presented strategies for research productivity through CARIM. University Researcher Mitchiko Lopez and Extension Specialist Michael Noel Bonghanoy spoke on targeting funding and on strategies for improving research outputs, respectively. Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Nilo Oponda gave updates on UP Mindanao's research initiatives. The workshop proper focused on crafting multi- and inter-disciplinary research programs for targeted funding.            
 
INFORMATION SEMINAR ON GSIS PROGRAMS, 30 JULY
 
Mr. Deity U. Manampan, Branch Head of GSIS Region-XI, will lead an Information Seminar on GSIS Programs on 30 July 2019, 9 AM - 12 NN, at the CHSS AVR, Administration Bldg., UP Mindanao. The Seminar will convey information on the new GSIS benefit programs, refresh knowledge on existing policies, and address/clarify personal GSIS-related concerns. The January 2019 edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published at http://www.webometrics.info/en/Asia/Philippines. University of the Philippines Diliman is still the country's no. 1 university based on web presence, impact, openness and excellence, the Spanish National Research Council’s Webometrics has reported. UP Mindanao is ranked at 13th nationwide and 2nd in Mindanao in the 2019 Top 200 Universities and Colleges in the Philippines.

22nd COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES AND INVESTITURE OF 5TH CHANCELLOR
 
The University of the Philippines Mindanao held its 22nd Commencement Exercises on 21 June 2019. Executive Vice President Teodoro J. Herbosa led the awarding of diplomas to the Class of 2019. It was UP Mindanao’s biggest batch to date, with 353 graduates. The university had its first summa cum laude, Ms. Pete Maverick Nicole Estudillo, BS Food Technology. This news item went “viral” nationwide. The class of 2019 had the most number of magna cum laude (13) and cum laude (80) graduates. 
 
The investiture of Professor Larry N. Digal as the 5th Chancellor of UP Mindanao was held in conjunction with the commencement exercises. Regent Angelo A. Jimenez led the Investiture Ceremony. In his speech, Chancellor Digal said, “UP Mindanao is committed to becoming Mindanao-focused but adopting an international outlook... with the university bringing the best of the world to Mindanao and the best of Mindanao to the rest of the world.”

REACTIVATION OF UGNAYAN NG PAHINUNGOD

Chancellor Larry N. Digal reactivated and formally established the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod in UP Mindanao on 1 June 2019 through Administrative Order No. LND 2019-070. This was in compliance to President Danilo L. Concepcion’s Executive Order No. PDLC 19-01. Mr. Michael A. Gatela, University Extension Specialist II, was appointed Officer-in-Charge through Administrative Order No. LND 2019-071, effective 1 June to 31 December 2019. The Pahinungod will be placed under the Office of the Chancellor and will carry out functions consistent with UP’s “social and moral responsibility” and “institutional commitment to promote and provide volunteer work by its faculty, staff, graduates, and students to underserved areas or communities.”   
 
GEO-SAFER PROJECT CLOSE-OUT
 
The Geo-SAFER Mindanao Closing Conference was held on 05 June 2019 in Caraga State University (CarSU). The heads of the participating institutions, such as Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Central Mindanao University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, UP Mindanao, and CarSU attended and gave their respective closing messages.
 
TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS INCUBATION MOA SIGNED
 
Chancellor Larry Digal signed a memorandum of agreement with the Dept. of Science and Technology (DOST) on 10 June 2019 for the establishment of the UPGRADE, UP Mindanao's Technology Business Incubation (TBI), with funding from the DOST. In the agreement, the TBI will facilitate the transformation of at least 15 promising research & development products by UP Mindanao constituents and other proponents to become viable business applications and, in the process, promote entrepreneurship through innovation as a viable career path for Filipinos. Asst. Prof. Miguel Guillermo, the TBI Manager, said the TBI will focus on Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable Food Systems and techno-entrepreneurs from inside and outside the university who have qualified projects are encouraged to apply for technology-business incubation. The TBI will provide common service facilities and referrals to credit providers for entrepreneurs to grow their business from the idea stage to the enterprise stage within a period of two years. The signing by Chancellor Digal followed the approval by the DOST Governing Council of the UP Mindanao proposal on 8 April 2019. Previous to that, the Technical Panel of the DOST-Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Techno-preneurship (HEIRIT) screened the UP Mindanao proposal and endorsed it for the approval of the Governing Council. Construction of the TBI facility and will be implemented upon receipt of funds from the DOST. The TBI will be supervised by Prof. Guillermo as Manager and Ms. Lynda Buenaobra as IT Support Office Manager.   
 
 
DAVAO CITY STARTUP ECOSYSTEM MAPPING
 
 
The UP Mindanao TBI participated in the multi-sectoral Davao City Startup Ecosystem Mapping on 14 June 2019. The participants mapped out the stakeholders, potential industry partners, relevant government agencies, and the target markets for the information technology start-ups. 
 
 
MOU FOR COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR LGUS
 
 
UP Mindanao and 8 other higher educational institutions (HEI) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Interior and Local Government-Region 11 on 28 June 2019 to help local government units in the formulation of their Comprehensive Development Plan. Prof. Jean Marie Juanga, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, signed on behalf of UP Mindanao. 
 
 
MARILOG LAND RESERVATION
 
 
The Land Reservations Management Office (LRMO) provided a seminar on sustainable abaca production to the UP Marilog Land Reservation community on 11 June 2019, in coordination with the tribe, the barangay council, and the Fiber Industry Development Authority-Region XI.

BEST DISSERTATION AND NEW PH.D.
 
Asst. Prof. Karen Joyce Cayamanda of the Department of Humanities was awarded the “Best PhD Dissertation” by the UP Los Baños College of Public Affairs and Development for her work on “Risk communication management for flood-vulnerable communities of Davao City, southern Philippines.” Prof. Cayamanda is the second UP Mindanao faculty member to graduate from the UPLB PhD in Development Studies off-site program that is hosted by UP Mindanao.  
 
 
DEVELOPMENT OF FACULTY ONLINE PROFILE
 
The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science organized a Workshop on the Development of Faculty Online Profile on 7 June 2019. The project is expected to improve the online presence of each and every faculty member of the university. 
 
THESIS COMPETITIONS
    
The BS Biology program held the 2019 BS Biology Best Thesis competition on 14 June 2019 at the College of Science and Mathematics. The main competitions were the oral competition, of which there were six, and the poster competition, of which there were 30. The oral presentations were on rice, tomato, rabies, and biodiversity. The posters were on purification, quality, senescence and similar studies on animals, fishes, fruits, and bioactive compounds from plants, among others.  The BS Applied Mathematics and the BS Computer Science programs held their 2019 Best Special Problem competition on 13 June 2019. The papers used data analyses, statistics, algorithms, linear programming on banana flour, inventories, tuberculosis, traffic, fisheries, rabies, and other subjects. The BS Food Technology Undergraduate Research Conference was held on 27 May 2019 at the CSM Building. These included food and materials product development. 
 
 
CAREER ORIENTATION AND JOB PLACEMENT
 
The Office of Student Affairs Counseling and Testing Section organized the Career Placement Orientation and Pre-Employment Seminar and the Annual Job Fair on 3-4 June 2019. Chancellor Larry Digal gave the Inspirational Message, wherein he advised the graduating students to “nail it” as a memo for the acronym “P-A-C-O,” or “Plan-Act-Check-Open.” The last word to mean, “keep an open mind.” Mr. Kim L. Chua, Managing Director of Jobs180.com Incorporated, spoke on “The Next Generation Resume” and “Personal Branding (Dressing Up for Success),” and Ms. Mary Anne Love Deseo, Training and Development Manager of Awesome OS, spoke about “Ace-ing Job Interviews.” The companies and their personnel accommodated the job applicants in the Annual Job Fair held in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Food and agriculture, information technology, real estate, energy, and business process outsourcing industries were represented at the Fair.  The companies who participated in the Job Fair were the following: Aboitiz Corporation, Advanced World Systems Corp., Blue Sun Phils. Inc., Dole Phils. Corp., Franklin Baker Corp., Gaisano Mal of Davao, Phoenix Petroleum Corp., Rococo Global Technologies Corp., Awesome OS, Azeus Systems Phils., JTC Companies, Lapanday Foods Corp., and Teleperformance Company. The Public Employment Services Office (PESO)-Calinan provided support services.     
 
SEND-OFF CEREMONIES
  
Send-off ceremonies were organized by the three colleges for their graduating students and the parents. The ceremonies included recognition for students who excelled in academics, leadership, arts and cultural activities, and athletics. Winners for best thesis were announced and awarded. The colleges invited the following speakers for their ceremonies: former faculty member and Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Mr. Roberto Alabado III for the School of Management; alumnus Dr. Edward Cagape for the College of Science and Mathematics; and architecture board exam 4th placer, alumna and faculty member, Ar. Kristin Faye Olalo for the College of Humanities and Social Science. 
 
INFRASTRUCTURE
 
Improvement of roofs was undertaken for P5 million in the administration building, the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) building, and the Learning Resource Center rooms.  
 
Improvement of rest rooms was done for P5 million in the administration building, Elias B. Lopez Hall dormitory, CSM, Kalimudan Student Center, Human Kinetics Center, and University Student Council room. 
 
In other infrastructure developments, the Marilog land reservation training center was completed and the campus housing/hostel building is near completion. Electrification and piped-in water for the Center of Advancement of Research and Engagement in Mindanao (CARIM) building phase 1 is expected soon. The turn-over of the Coconut Tissue Culture Lab phase 2 was accomplished and that for the CHSS Cultural Center phase 1 is in-process. 
 
In the Sports Complex, the swimming pool is under repair and construction of the bleachers is on-going. The official turn-over of the track and football field and stadium and of the training gym is expected soon. 

Instructions on how to claim for refunds of school fees paid

When your matriculation fees have been lowered due to STS tuition discounts, or when your Scholarship Sponsor has already paid the University, please submit the following:
 
1.   Duly Accomplished Refund Form*, please write your contact number.
2.   Attach Photocopy of Form 5 of the semester to be refunded as well as the other documents/attachments - (2 copies)
Ex. 1st Semester AY2014-2015, attach Form 5 and official receipt(s) of 1st Sem AY 2014-2015
3.   Attach Official Receipt/s (Original + Photocopy for each receipt), not valid without the original copy. In case of lost receipt(s), request the Cash Office for Duly Certified Photocopy indicating the date/OR Number and the amount paid (refer to your Form 5).
4.   For lost Original copy of Receipts, provide duly notarized affidavit of loss.
5.   Submit according to the list of requirements (please staple your documents) to the Office of Student Affairs during office hours.
 
Deadline for submission of documents for 1st batch will be on or before 29 August 2014,Friday. Documents received after the aforementioned date shall be processed for October 2014 release.
*Refund form maybe downloaded from www.upmin.edu.ph website.
