Excel I.T. Training, 2014

Prof. Vic Calag (Dept. of Math, Physics and Computer Science) led the Training on Microsoft Excel for all faculty and staff of University of the Philippines Mindanao. This was held over three separate batches on March 3 and 10, 2014. The topics were mathematical functions, statistical functions, text functions (e.g merging/unmerging text), logical functions, sorting data, filtering data, lookup reference (e.g. vlookup), and to transpose tables. For faculty members, the training includes how to compute students' grades efficiently and finish the task in seconds/minutes instead of day/s with 100% accuracy.


Gender Research Forum 2014

International Women's Month continued with a Gender Research Forum held on March 14 at Lorenzo Hall. Ms. Kennette Jean Millondaga facilitated the program. Prof. Ann Shangrila Fuentes gave the background to the celebration and the forum. Prof. Genevieve Quintero presented, "Campaign Slogans of Female Senatorial Candidates in the Philippines' 2013 Elections", focusing on Loren Legrada, Nancy Binay, and Cynthia Villar. Ms. Sarah Obsioma presented, "Gender Roles and Issues in the Philippine Tuna Value Chain" that touched on inequalities of pay. Prof. Jon Marx Sarmiento spoke on "Women in Agriculture: The Case of Cacao Farmers in Calinan" that disclosed the limited functions but influential roles of women. An extended open forum followed. Prof. Raymundo Pavo also gave his reactions. Among the guests were Bgy. Mintal Women's Council. The organizers were the University Gender Committee and the Office of Extension and Community Service.


Administrative Services Workshop, 2014

The Administrative Services under VC Antonio Obsioma held a workshop on common administrative procedures on February 17, 2014. This is in pursuit of the strategic thrust towards operational excellence. Among the immediate actions taken after this activity was the dissemination by e-mail to all employees of a soft-copy of a checklist of documents for administrative transactions.      


Architecture's 2nd Mindanao Research Conference

The 2nd Mindanao Research Conference was hosted by UP Mindanao Department of Architecture led by department chairperson Prof. Jean Marie V. Juanga along with faculty members and fellow-architects Alexis Cartagenas, Ericson Europa, Johann Abellanosa, Nory Loyd Pernes, Ryan Songcayauon, Maria Rallah Villaseca and Dan Jezreel Orendain. The Conference was participated in by architectural schools University of Mindanao and Ateneo de Davao University. The following lectures were delivered:

•    Water Sustainable Urban Design: A Primer on Low Impact Design for Davao City, John Immanuel Palma, ADDU
The unveiling of Kalibongan: Travelling Photo Exhibition of Dance Festivities and Arts of the Highland Tribes of Mindanao. The UP Mindanao Department will be showcasing the dances and architecture of 6 different tribes namely:
o    Mandaya – Madayaw na Pagdating
o    T’boli – Madal Tahaw
o    Bagobo – Binagobo Dance
o    B’laan – Arak Del
o    Matigsalog – Sayaw sa Saluray to Kudlong
o    Meranao - Singkil
It will be exhibited in major cities of Mindanao such as Cagayan de Oro City, General Santos City, Cotabato City, Tagum City, Digos City, and Mati City to name a few.

Public Lectures on 2nd Week of UP Mindanao anniversary

Six public lectures will be given in UP Mindanao in the coming week. The Lorenzo Hall at Administration Bldg. will be the venue of four lectures, all scheduled at 10am on the following dates: February 10, "Genetics of spine-formation in sago" by Prof. Annabelle Novero;Feb. 11, “Taste vs. rarity in sea cucumbers” by Prof. Ruth Gamboa;Feb. 12, "Coral-algal phase shift in Siargao" by Prof. Cleto Nañola; andon Feb. 13, “Pomelo postharvest” by Prof. Emma Bayogan. On Feb. 13, 1pm will be a colloquium on science and photography. In other venues on campus, "Total quality in the supply chain of foods" by Dr. Val Tanguilig will be at the CHSS AVR on Feb. 10, 2pm, while "Twenty years of lactic acid bacteria" by Prof. Virginia Obsioma will be at CSM Room 227 on Feb. 12, 2:30pm.   All events are open to the public.
