An ACIAR team visited UPMin on March 21, 2023, for an impact assessment scoping mission on the "Enhanced profitability of selected vegetable value chains in the southern Philippines Program (HORT/2007/066)." 

Bethany Davies, Research Manager, and Matt Armstrong, Research Officer of the ACIAR Portfolio Planning and Impact Evaluation, led the ACIAR team. They were accompanied by Julie Delforce of Alinea International, the evaluation consultant. Ms. Hazel Aniceto and Mara Faylon, the Country Manager and Assistant Country Manager, respectively, of ACIAR Philippines, completed the team. 

The team paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Chancellor, where they were received by the OIC, School of Management Dean Aurelia Luzviminida Gomez.

The ACIAR team likewise interviewed UPMin's Adjunct Professor Sylvia Concepcion, Asst. Prof. Roxanne Aguinaldo, Dean Gomez, and University Researcher Marilou Montiflor as key informants.

The project contributes to poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, and economic growth, through the agricultural and food management of small enterprises through the partnership of ACIAR with UPMin.

WMSU and CMU biologists take PGC-Min training

Scientists from the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and the Central Mindanao University (CMU) arrived at UPMin on March 28, 2023, to take the Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) training provided by the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao. The scientists paid a courtesy visit to Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao before proceeding to the training. The WMSU team availed of the training for their study on ZamPen chicken, a Niche Center in the Region (NICER) for R&D, supported by the DOST. The WMSU team was composed of Dr. Kay P. Ramos, Dr. Genelyn G. Madjos, Dr. Myrtle AnnE. Penarendo, and Mr. Femie Jhay F. Maatubang. The CMU team was composed of Dr. Mark Lloyd G. Dapar, Dr. Chris Rey M. Lituanas, Ms. Karen Gem D. Ares, Ms. Marla Luz C. Capin, and Mr. Josipino B. Malaki, Jr. PGC-Min's Ms. Joan Acaso and Science Research Associate Juliet L. Arieja guided the visiting team. 

AUN-QA team visit

Ms. Ninnart Ratanasukhon and Mr. Korn Ratanagosoom, representatives of the Office of the AUN Secretariat, Thailand, visited UP Mindanao on March 28, 2023, during their engagement in Davao City. Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao (right) led the welcome, and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero led the UPMin team in engaging the AUN team.  VC Novero was joined by Registrar Karen Joyce Cayamanda, School of Management Dean Aurelia Gomez, College of Science and Mathematics OIC Vicente Calag, and College of Humanities and Social Sciences Asst. Prof. Dennis Sumaylo. The AUN and UPMin teams exchanged updates from their respective sectors. The AUN team also toured the campus and viewed the facilities. The ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) is a network that aims to align the standards and pursue continuous improvement of higher education in the ASEAN region.

Mindanao Development Authority’s Sylvester “Bum” Sales (sixth from left) led a team to visit UP Mindanao on March 13, 2023, to invite UPMin’s participation in an agricultural marketing project of the Center for Asian Mission for the Poor (CAMP) to be supported by the Government of Korea. The team plans to hold the project launch on March 31, 2023. Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero, Mr. Allan Villanueva of the Office of the Chancellor, and Joel Sagadal of the Land Reservation Management Office received the visiting team composed of (fourth from left, to right) Rev. Lee, Chul Yong, and Ms. Cho, Buyoung of CAMP, Mr. Sales, Ms. Chrisel Sales of the University of Southern Mindanao, and Ms. Ronita Buenaventura of UNORKA-Mindanao.

UP Mindanao's Prof. Aleyla E. de Cadiz (Dept. of Biological Science and Environmental Studies) participated in a security workshop organized by the US Department of State. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in partnership with UP System CBRNE Center for Excellence Focus Group and support from the US Department of State Chemical Security Program, conducted a workshop, “Strengthening Chemical Threat Agent Analysis and Source Attribution Capabilities in the Philippines”, from 8-11 November 2022 at the Sheraton Manila. Participants included UP System faculty members and local partners such as the Philippines Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PIPAC), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Philippine National Police (PNP). The PNNL experts who visited Manila included Dr. Jonathan Forman–PNNL Science and Technology Advisor and former Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Science Policy Adviser and Secretary to the OPCW Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), who was accompanied by Dr. Michael Jones– Program Advisor, Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction, US Department of State.
