BS Biology

PROGRAM PROFILE

The Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies (DBSES) offers a 4-year BS Biology degree program with 147 units. The program offers a learning experience that encompasses the theoretical, quantitative, and applied aspects of the biological sciences. The strong foundation courses, the intensive practical laboratory and field experiences, and elective courses prepare the students for careers in scientific research, medicine, education, policy-making, environmental management, and several related fields in the country and the world. The graduates of the program will acquire critical thinking, social accountability, ethical judgment, equity, and openness for continuing professional development.

The curriculum includes the conduct of undergraduate thesis which provides the students the opportunity to perform research work along with their chosen field of specialization under the guidance of their selected faculty adviser.

At the end of the program, the students are expected to:

a. Acquire solid theoretical background and laboratory skills for the fields of research,
medicine, industry, and teaching biology;
b. Develop intellectual capacity for scientific method in problem solving (Botany, Zoology,
Microbiology, Genetics, Ecology);
c. Use of the scientific method to relate biological concepts with other fields of discipline in
the natural or social sciences;
d. Communicate the correct scientific information, ideas, problems, and solutions clearly
either through speech or in writings to other scientists, decision makers, and the general
public in scientific and popularized forms;
e. Practice responsible work ethics in order to promote continued professional development
for domestic and global opportunities;
f. Promote good governance and decision making based on scientific and socially
acceptable approaches actively;
g. Utilize natural resources in the Philippines with emphasis on endemic and threatened
organisms;
h. Appreciate biological and cultural diversity in dealing with contemporary issues in biology
i. Solve problems based on scientific processes to reach a sound decision;
j. Create new knowledge, product, or patent emanating from the conduct of research; and
k. Apply an evidence-based approach to uphold environmental justice and equity.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the BS Biology program may pursue a medical degree while others can explore opportunities in teaching and/or research within government and private institutions. They can also find careers in government organizations focused on biological conservation and advocacy, or as scientists and innovators in health and biotech industry and institutions.
