DEAN JHOANNA CRUZ

Prof. Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz, Ph.D. was appointed Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences by the UP Board of Regents during its 1385th meeting on November 30, 2023.

Dean Cruz's term is effective 01 December 2023 until 30 November 2026.

Prof. Cruz served as chairperson of the Department of Humanities prior to her new appointment.

The presenters and organizers in the "Kahimunan: Mindanao Research Colloquium 2023"  

The Department of Human Kinetics delivered the "Kahimunan: Mindanao Research Colloquium 2023" with the theme "Mindanao Sports Development" in UP Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City from November 17 to 18, 2023. Researchers gathered to present their studies related to sports development, sports performance, sports psychology, wellness and recreation, and gender equality/indigenous games.

Presenters and attendees had a fruitful discussion with respect to the methods and results of the studies.

The Department of Human Kinetics hopes that the colloquium will open up more opportunities and ideas to the participants that will help strengthen the Mindanao Sports Development Program.

CHSS Faculty at AMIC Conference, Indonesia

UPMin faculty members from the BA Communication & Media Arts program were invited as conference partners of the 29th Asian Media Information and Communication (AMIC) Conference in Bandung, Indonesia. Eight papers were accepted for the conference, and the UPMin faculty delivered five onsite presentations.

Asst. Prof. Melissa Claire Barerra-Yap presented "Effectiveness of a Participatory Guided Communication Strategy in Educating Female Adolescents against Rape Myths" and "Resisting Oppression, Embracing Interculturality: Exploring Critical Intercultural Communication within the Lumad Struggle in the Philippines." 

Prof.Karen Joyce Cayamanda presented "Towards a Community-based Flood-risk Communication Management Framework for Davao City" and "Printed Visual Materials for Flood Awareness and Preparedness using Participatory Graphic Design."

Prof. Perez holds NCCA Gallery Exhibit

Associate Professor and UP Artist Teody Boylie "Bong" Perez holds his Art Exhibit, "Banikanhon” ("Ordinary Lives"), at the Glass Gallery of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts located at 633 Gen Luna St., Intramuros Manila. The exhibit runs from September 5 to 29, 2023.  Prof. Perez's solo art exhibit is held in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Prof. Perez holds an appointment as UP Artist 1. "Banikanhon" is his 16th Solo Exhibit.

The Search for Deans of two colleges proceeded in August. The School of Management's incumbent dean, Associate Prof. Aurelia Luzviminda Gomez, was the lone nominee for dean. In the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), Prof. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz was the lone nominee. 

In the Public Forum on August 2, 2023, Dean Gomez presented the State of the School report that covered human resources, instruction, research, extension & public service, the administration, and alumni relations. In the Extension and Public Service, highlights were the SOM's various forms of public service that benefitted farmers, fishers, micro-, small- & medium enterprises in Region XI and the Bangsamoro region. The search committee was composed of UP Visayas Assoc. Prof. Danilo Ortillo as Chairperson, UP Cebu Prof. Tiffany Tan as President's Representative, with Asst. Prof. Myrafe Ylagan, Kasmira Blaise Sigue, Alma Marcelino, and student Charis Anne Canceran. Support staff were Keesha Eluceth Sabijon and Rhodeza Mae Amelda-Shotwell 

In the CHSS Public Forum on August 22, Dean Raymundo Pavo presented his State of the College report, a highlight of which was the creation of the Mindanao Studies Center, the three new degree programs in sports, and the various Academic Program Improvements.  Prof. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz, the chairperson of the Department of Humanities, presented her vision "Baluy CHSS" in the form of "Objectives." The CHSS Search Committee was composed of UP Visayas Assoc. Prof. Arnel Tampos, Prof. Tiffany Tan, Asst. Prof. Marbie Alpos, Univ. Librarian Briccio Merced Jr., Land Mgt. Officer Joel Sagadal, and student representative Armand Glenn Martin with support staff Frances Aivie Ballerta and Coralyn Aborde.
