BS ARCHITECTURE students won top prizes in the Projeto design contest, held at the PhilBex construction expo in SM Lanang, Davao City on 11 May 2019. Working within a given constraint of a 30-square-meter living area for a family with a child, a number of UP Mindanao teams stepped up to solve the requirement. According to the students, they were given three months preparation time to conceptualize their designs, build scale models, and the accompanying visual presentations.

The "Flexi Filipino" design by the team of Louis Alvarez, Jairo Christian Royo, Pamela Puig, and Frances Ianelle Campo were awarded as Grand Winner in a field with three competing schools. The winning team explained that they used the concepts of convertible furniture and movable walls to create the living space.

Winning 2nd Prize was "Pamulak" by another UP Mindanao student team and 3rd Prize went "Kasya" by a third UP Mindanao team. However, the other teams were not available for comment as they had left the venue. All winners won trophies, certificates, and cash. Mr. Royo said their efforts were purely voluntary and for experience and will not earn them any academic credit.

Official statement on the EBL Dorm Lockdown

The University of the Philippines Mindanao would like to express deep regrets for the inconveniences to its constituents, most especially the students, caused by the security measures and protocols during the Opening Ceremonies of the Palarong Pambansa last Sunday, 28 April 2019 at the Davao City-UP Sports Complex located at the UP Mindanao Campus.

The security measures were pursuant to protocols for national security, as well as, for public safety; hence, beyond the control of the University. Nevertheless, the UP Mindanao administration sympathizes with those affected by the security measures during the Opening Ceremonies of the Palarong Pambansa considering the unfortunate circumstances.

As partners for the management and operations of the Davao City-UP Sports Complex, the University and the Davao City government are working together to craft policies, including policies related to security protocols, to prevent similar incidents happening in the future.

The University reiterates its commitment to uphold everyone’s rights to liberty and movement.
