January in UP Mindanao serves as prelude to its 22nd Anniversary in February. The 2nd Semester of Academic Year 2016-2017 began on 16 January. The classes in the re-opened degree program in Urban and Regional Planning begins on 21 January. 

The publication "Banwa Monograph Series 1: Mapping Sago" was released by the Office of Research. The Monograph contains 11 articles with Associate Professor Myfel D. Paluga (Dept. of Social Sciences) as Editor. Read the details here.

The Land Reservation project titled "Economic Upliftment of the Indigenous People's Community through Agricultural Projects" was selected as one of the awardees of the UP System's "Gawad Pangulo: Award for Excellence in Public Service". Land Reservations Officer Joel N. Sagadal, the project proponent, will represent UP Mindanao in the awarding ceremony on 30 January in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

In extension and public service, the Communicators Guild will hold "Pamamahayag: A Seminar-Workshop on Campus Journalism" for public high school students of Marahan and Marilog High Schools (Davao City) on 23 January. Read the details here.   

In operations, an ISO 9001:2015 GQMSS Requirements and Documentation Seminar will be held on 25-27 January at the University Library. This is in compliance to Executive Order No. 605, the Government Quality Management Program (GQMP).

In research, 17 research papers will be presented in the "In-House Review 2017 of All UP Mindanao-Funded Research" on 30 January. An external panel of experts will hear and give feedback. 

Also on 30 January is the Inter-School Statistics Quiz organized by the Society of Math Majors in the University Atrium.

In faculty development, Instructor Mylene P. Arcena (Dept. of Food Sci. and Chem.) departed in January 2017 to avail of a scholarship to the University of Otago, New Zealand.            

In alumni affairs, the UP Mindanao BA Social Science Class of 2002--represented by Ms. Diocy Cloribel-Guilabtan, Mr. Jayneil Ancheta, and Dr. Ava Patricia Avila-Goldman--donated textbooks to the University Library on 6 January. See the photo here.

The UP Alumni Association Davao held elections for directors on 7 January. A total of 11 directors were elected, completing the board comprising of 18 seats. Read the details and see some photos here.

The UP Alumni Association Davao held elections for directors on 7 January 2017. Re-elected were Marie Glenn Cedeño-Sorila, Benny Corcolon, Michael Gatela, Joel Laserna, Trisha Lopena, John Carlo Tria, and Charmaine Valentin. Newly-elected were Vergel Jay Bautista, Carla Louise Bayquen, Kelly Marie Conlon, and Joel Sagadal. The elected directors will join continuing directors Amador Siapno, Sherwin Ramos, and John Labay, and the ex-officio directors, composed of immediate past president Roberto Puentespina, the presidents of the UPLB Alumni Association Davao and the UP Mindanao Alumni Association, and UP Mindanao Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion. The current projects of UPAA-DAVAO are the improvement of the UP Mindanao Oblation Plaza, the Alumni Legacy Tiles for the Oblation Plaza, and the "Isang Libong Alumni" fellowships.

2016 120116 PUBLIC AFF CAL 1 MASTHEAD SMALLDecember completes the end of First Semester of Academic Year 2016-2017 in UP Mindanao. Final examinations are scheduled on 01-06 December. 

The UP Alumni Association Davao reaches 67 years of existence on December 4, having been founded in 1949. 

The Davao Writers Workshop 2016 spends its continuing workshop days on December 1-4 with the closing ceremonies on the last day at the venue, The Big House Heritage Home.

The Kasadya Christmas Lantern Parade will be on 07 December . This year's theme is "Kaugalingon, Tinubdan sa Nindot nga Kausaban: Atong Paglaum sa Karong Kapaskuhan" (Self, the Source of Positive Change: Our Hope for this Christmas). This year's celebration will include the traditional Building Decoration Contest, Parolan (Lantern Parade and Parol Contest), and the Christmas Dance Contest.

Festivities will begin with the Judging of the Building Decoration Contest on 2 December. The Pailaw (Lighting Ceremony) follows on Monday, 5 December, 5 PM, at the University Atrium Oblation Park.

Kasadya 2016 Parolan Christmas Lantern Parade is on Wednesday, 7 December 2016. Assembly is at 3PM at the College of Science and Mathematics grounds. Parade begins at sunset from the CSM Grounds to the Administration Building. The parade will be followed by the Kasadya 2016 Program, with the Christmas Dance Contest and other fun activities.

Student organizations are organizing "Love in a Box" for 40 Ata-Manobo children (4-15 years old) in Haran evacuation center, Davao City. Gifts in cash or in kind are accepted for gift-wrapping on December 8, 1-5PM, at the University Atrium. Gift-giving is on December 12, 1PM onward, at Haran, to be documented by ABS-CBN television for the Christmas Day episode of "Mag-TV Na Sadya Ta!"

In academic affairs, the College of Science and Mathematics will hold the following events: December 8, CSM Research Colloquium; December 12, Academic Integrity: In Relation to Student Writing and Achievement, a Lecture by Dr. Scott Meissner, Visiting Professor (Dept. of Bio. Sci. and Environ. Studies); December 13, CSM Pocket Session on Publication Writing.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Training will be held on December 12, 13, and 14 for partners in the Davao River Basin Management Council. On December 19, 20 and 21, 2016 the training is for UP Mindanao constituents. This will provide essential knowledge and application skills in geo-tagging and GIS Mapping using the ArcGIS platform. Venue is in the campus. Reservations are accepted at the OVCAA. Only 40 slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Symposium on Mindanao Issues and Federalism, 2016

In the spirit of public service and to contribute to improving knowledge on relevant issues to Mindanaoans, the public is invited to the Symposium on Mindanao Issues and Federalism, on the theme "Panahon ng pagbabago, Pagtulungan natin ito!"

The Symposium on Mindanao Issues and Federalism will be held on 15 October 2016, Saturday, 1-5 PM, in the Administration Building, UP Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City. The resource speakers are Ms. Amina Rasul-Bernardo, Mr. Lito Monico Lorenzana, and other experts.

The Symposium is open to everyone. Admission is free of charge. An Open Forum will be part of the program to allow members of the audience to ask questions or express their sentiments. Certificates of Participation will be issued upon request.
