The University of the Philippines Board of Regents (UP BOR), in its 1379th Meeting held on April 3, 2023, approved two new UP Mindanao (UPMin) degree programs, the Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS), and the Master of Science in Human Movement Science (MSHMS). Both programs will be offered by the First Semester of Academic Year 2023-2024 in September 2023.

“We have been looking forward to the approval of our new degree programs,” said UPMin chancellor Lyre Anni Murao. “This is part of UP Mindanao’s commitment to innovate and broaden our academic offerings in response to the emerging demands of the 21st century,” she said.

The BSDS will be implemented by the Dept. of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Sciences (DMPCS). DMPCS chairperson Cinmayii Manliguez invited interested applicants to “unlock the power of data with our Bachelor of Science in Data Science to chart paths to success."

“BSDS students will benefit from the faculty's expertise in applied mathematics and computer science, which is expanded with new expertise in big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling, simulation, and data visualization, which has had wide adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

MSHMS, on the other hand, is a graduate program of the Dept. of Human Kinetics (DHK) which focuses on the study of human movement from basic to applied aspects and from the biological/physiological to the psychological, and neuro-scientific perspectives.

“The MSHMS program will be beneficial to professionals who need higher education related to their discipline,” said DHK chairperson Jezreel Abarca. “These are physical education instructors, sports and human movement practitioners, administrators of physical activity-related programs, and those in the allied medical professions,” she said.

Interested applicants may visit the DHK social media page “Department of Human Kinetics - UP Mindanao” or send queries via email at ().

The ‘Science Beyond Borders’ anthology of case studies features UK-Philippine research collaborations throughout the Newton Agham Fund lifecycle.

In the anthology, Dr. de Cadiz, the project leader of One Health Omics, provided valuable insights into the challenges and successes of research collaborations, emphasizing the importance of exposing Mindanaoan researchers to bioinformatics tools and techniques.

The One Health Omics project at the University of the Philippines Mindanao, in collaboration with PGC Mindanao, is a great example of how research collaborations between the UK and the Philippines can lead to building a bioinformatics workforce in Mindanao that can push the boundaries of knowledge and contribute to both science and the community.
