Message of the University President

Written by Rene Estremera. Posted in Forums

PAJ June 2023 by Misael BacaniCROPT

Atty. Angelo A. Jimenez is the 22nd University President. He was born and raised in Butuan, Agusan del Norte, and earned his BS in Sociology and Bachelor of Laws from UP Diliman. He is a former Chairperson of the UP Diliman University Student Council and served as UP Student Regent in 1992. He also served as a UP Regent from 2016-2021. He is the first UP president from Mindanao and the first student regent to be appointed as university president. His term is from February 2023 to January 2029.

University President Angelo A. Jimenez encouraged the Class of 2023 to create a bold new future for Filipinos and humankind using the university-acquired knowledge and skills in science, the humanities, and critical thinking. He offered this goal as a way for the graduates to create value for the Filipino people who subsidize UP. In addition, he asked the graduates to give this offering of a bold new future with kindness and compassion. All of which he conveyed through a written message below.

###

Pahalipay, University of the Philippines Mindanao Class of 2023, on your graduation!

I share in your euphoria and your sense of triumph after weathering the challenges of academia, from passing all your classes, papers, and exams to navigating all the social complexities of being a UP student. Congratulations on your hard-earned achievement, and I hope you enjoy an equally hard-earned break from all your toils before taking on the world outside UP.

I also congratulate your families and loved ones for their unwavering support throughout your academic journey in UP. Congratulations as well to your professors, administrators, and staff in UP Mindanao, who worked hard to teach you and to create a nurturing learning environment for you. Your triumph today is their triumph, too.

In the years you have spent as a student of UP Mindanao, you have gained the scientific knowledge and artistic and humanistic skills you need to excel in any profession or field you choose; the ability to adapt to any circumstances, to be resilient and resourceful in the worst situations; to analyze problems and generate innovative solutions particularly for the needs and issues of the Southern Philippines, using insights from multiple disciplines; and to study our social realities, to think critically and independently, and to stand up fearlessly for what is right. You have learned what the UP principles of honor and excellence mean and how to apply these to every aspect of your life. These foundational lessons will see you through every challenge outside UP Mindanao’s halls and green, tree-filled campus.

However, I challenge you to go beyond "honor" and "excellence" and to confront one of the great moral paradoxes of UP today: The education you received at UP is free and subsidized. We in UP have been enabled to do what we do—to study, to learn, to do research—directly by the Filipino people. Every peso that goes toward educating you, and enables you to become successful professionals and leaders in your fields, is a peso taken from somebody else: from a needy patient in a UP PGH charity ward, from families living in tents after fleeing from wars and conflicts, from our indigenous communities living on the fringes of national society.

As you walk forward into your future, I call on you to take on the moral responsibility of an Iskolar ng Bayan and to give back to the nation and the region that nurtured you. Our people expect you to uphold UP's principles of honor and excellence in every word and action. More than that, though, you must commit yourselves to UP's third principle of compassion. Be kind, UP Mindanao Class of 2023. Be humble enough to learn from others, be patient enough to understand the diversity of our needs and realities, and be empathetic to the struggles of those who are not like you, especially the voiceless and marginalized. Above all, be kind. Serve our people with kindness and courage.

Padayon, UP Mindanao Class of 2023, creates a bold, new future for our nation and humanity.

And know that we, the UP community, will always have your back.

Mabuhay kayo!

Officials of the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) awarded diplomas to 252 graduates in its 25th Commencement Exercises held on July 18, 2023. The Class of 2023 come from ten undergraduate programs, one associate program, two diploma programs, and two graduate programs.

Ms. Amora earned a Cumulative Weighted Average Grade (CWAG) of 1.1460, within the range of 1.000-1.2000, based on the highest possible grade of 1.00, earning her the Latin honor of summa cum laude.

She is UP Mindanao’s third summa cum laude and also the third from the BS Food Technology program. Her thesis was on "Ultrathin Polyelectrolyte/AgNP Film as a Potential Antibacterial Surface Coating."

The Class of 2023 also has 57 magna cum laude. Each earned a CWAG within the 1.021-1.45 range. The speakers at the 25th Commencement Exercises sent off the Class of 2023 with the highest hopes for nation-building in Mindanao.

In his message to the graduates, UP President Angelo Jimenez said, "I call on you to take on the moral responsibility of an Iskolar ng Bayan and to give back to the nation and the region that nurtured you. Be humble enough to learn from others, be patient enough to understand the diversity of our needs and realities, and be empathetic to the struggles of those who are not like you, especially the voiceless and marginalized."

Commencement speaker Mr. Ronald Mascariñas said, "As you embark on your respective path, strive to make a positive impact.  Be the catalysts for change and progress that our country needs.  Seek opportunities to bridge gaps, uplift the marginalized, and foster inclusivity."

UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Ani Murao, for her part, pointed to the Sablay, the garment worn over the shoulder of a UP graduate.

Chancellor Murao led the awarding of diplomas, assisted by Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Annabelle Novero and University Registrar Karen Joyce Cayamanda. Alumni Regent Robert Lester Arancon, Executive Vice President Jose Fernando Alcantara, and Vice President for Administration Nestor Yunque were among the witnesses to the awarding. UP Media and Public Relations Office Director Sir Anril Tiatco and Padayon Public Service Director Cherish Aileen Brillon completed the UP System delegation.

The processional began at 6:45 a.m. led by Student Affairs Director Ma. Stella Salazar, followed by the summa cum laude. The college secretaries led their respective graduates. The  UPMin faculty members, academic department chairpersons, and unit heads followed. The UPMin Mace was carried by University Registrar Karen Joyce Cayamanda, followed by Chancellor Murao. The UP System officials and the Commencement Speaker completed the personalities. The Entrance of the Color Guards completed the processional.

Good morning and a warm welcome to each and every one of you to this year’s Jobs Fair!

First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our graduating students who have worked tirelessly over the years to reach this significant milestone. It has been quite a ride, especially with the pandemic, but you made it to the finish line.

This Jobs Fair serves as a bridge between our graduating students and the professional world, providing a platform for meaningful interactions, exploration, and connections.

To our graduating students, I urge you to approach this job fair as an opportunity to showcase your unique abilities and talents. Engage in conversations with your employers, ask insightful questions, and most importantly, be confident in your abilities.

Remember that you are not just seeking employment but rather searching for an environment that will foster your personal and professional growth. This is your opportunity to connect with employers who share your values and vision, as it is these shared principles that will help you thrive in your chosen careers.

In this day and age of technological revolution, competition in the job force will be tough. You are not just competing with others, but also with technologies that force jobs to evolve. How you invent and reinvent yourself in these changing times will define how far you can go. For that, your lifelong learning will be a vital tool. Continue to build on life skills that will enable you to make relevant connections and contributions to your employers, co-workers, clients, and communities.

Companies from diverse industries set up tables at the Campus Job Recruitment to attract and offer employment opportunities to graduating students.

Chancellor Murao's Message to Graduating Students at the Career Orientation, June 19, 2023

To the graduating Class of 2023,

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone on your very soon graduation day, which would happen one month from now. Today's Career Placement Orientation and Pre¬Employment Seminar are very timely as it prepares you for the next chapter of your journey.

I would like to thank OSA, directed by Dr. Stella Salazar, for spearheading this activity. Of course, on behalf of the constituents of UP Mindanao, I would like to extend my appreciation to our resource person, Mr. Kim L. Chua from Jobs 180.com, Inc., who flew in all the way from Manila.

These are exciting times, and I'd like to give you three reasons why you should look forward to the prospect of a career.

 1. The work landscape is now changing dramatically. According to the World Economic Forum, our children today will ultimately end up in a job that has not yet existed at present times. Hence, the demand for new skills is growing faster than ever. Your generation has an expanding range of employment opportunities to help fill these gaps.

2. Emerging industries are opening new doors for careers in various fields such as e¬commerce, digital transformation, tech engineering, renewable • or alternative energy, healthcare service, diversity and inclusion, innovation and change management, and so much more. Traditional jobs are now evolving to meet the demands of the technological revolution. This is, therefore, an opportune time to establish your niche in an emerging profession.

3. If being tied to an employer is not your thing, you may also consider entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur, you can become a force for transformation beyond your organization by delivering economic growth, wealth generation, social change, and community development. In the PH, more individuals are now engaging in early-stage entrepreneurship than in the rest of Asia. We have also seen the rise of the gig economy comprised of independent freelancers or the so-called solopreneurs.

Your generation is offered a lot of interesting opportunities. But, for every opportunity comes responsibility. As an Isko, your mandate is to serve your countrymen, your community, and even your family.

Nevertheless, we are confident to release you into the world. Your rigorous training at the University has been your cornerstone. In fact, your experience during the pandemic has prepared you to be flexible and agile, ready to face real-world challenges and contribute to nation-building.

As you step out of the University, make sure to bring your lifelong learning with you.

According to the half-life concept, professional skills nowadays will last only five years, regardless of industry. Therefore, you must cultivate your life skills, especially in creativity and relationships. These are two critical areas of function that AI or other technologies can never replace.

And on that note, I'd like to leave you with one piece of advice: nurture your attitude more than your aptitude. Always remember the wise words of the motivational speaker Zig Ziglar: "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude."

Soar high, dear graduating students! I wish you all success.
