The CHED DARE TO Project “Vulnerability Assessment of Coastal Areas in Davao Gulf to Climate-related Hazards” will hold its “Presentation of Outputs and Virtual Map Turnover Ceremony” on 14 May 2021 from 08:30 AM to 04:00 PM. The research project presentation culminates the three-year partnership between the University of the Philippines Mindanao, the Davao del Norte State College, and local government units located in the Davao Gulf.

The project goals are to provide science-based and dynamic assessments of physical, biological, and socio-economic factors to generate vulnerability maps.

Some of the specific goals are:
  • to assess climate-related stimuli affecting the conditions of coastal resources, particularly mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs,
  • to assess the socio-economic situation of the fishing communities and the status of fisheries and aquaculture surrounding Davao Gulf
  • to produce training for research personnel, capability-building for local officers and personnel of various local government units (LGUs) located along Davao Gulf; produce various maps, publications, and policy briefs.

The project outputs will help the communities located along the Davao Gulf to understand and be aware of how climate change, human actions, and government efforts affect the overall health of coastal resources, the stability of the fishery sector, and the livelihood conditions of local fishing communities.

UP Mindanao will host the “4th International Workshop on Mathematical Biology'' or IWOMB 4, to be held online via Zoom on 09-11 June 2021 on the theme "Strengthening Decision Support System for Better Public Policy through Infectious Disease Modeling."

Live streaming for the IWOMB 4 keynote and plenary talks will be open to the public through a YouTube channel while the workshop proper (break-out sessions) shall be conducted via Zoom.

IWOMB, which started in 2018, aims to promote state-of-the-art mathematical biology research in the Philippines and provide an opportunity for local researchers to establish collaborations within the Philippines and between other countries.

Since 2018, IWOMB has brought together local enthusiasts in the field serving as a focal group to build a mathematical biology community to eventually lead towards the establishment of a professional organization.

IWOMB 4 shall gather 70 participants (consisting of graduate students, researchers, and educators) and will consist of talks on infectious disease modeling and its benefits to public health policies.

The attendees and participants are from different organizations and universities and the guest speakers and workshop facilitators are distinguished professors and researchers from different parts of the world. Joining IWOMB 4 are the members of the IWOMB Organizing Committee who started the event in 2018.

The Niche Center in the Regions for R&D – University of the Philippines Mindanao also known as "NICER-UPMIN" is the lead organizer of IWOMB 4.

NICER-UPMIN is a newly established research center that focuses on deriving insights from patterns and correlations of health-related data at different levels using quantitative methods, data analytics, and applied mathematical modeling approaches, in order to generate decision-support systems that will empower local government units and public health officials.
