Message of Chancellor Larry N. Digal to continuing students

Welcome back, students. I hope you were able to rest and recover from the challenges we all faced last semester. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us in myriad ways and brought many changes in the manner of how we traditionally do things in the academe. This pandemic upended higher education as we know it and profoundly affected educational institutions, including the University of the Philippines. The First Semester became a testing ground for the delivery of new learning ideas and methods and we all gained lessons from the experiences of the First Semester. From these lessons, we will continue to improve and develop ways and means to make this transition to remote learning as easy as possible for you. A foremost concern is your safety and protection as we go through another semester of remote learning. I would like to reiterate the commitment of the UP System to provide learning assistance to students who are in need, but let me take this opportunity to appeal for patience and understanding in any delays in receiving this assistance. There are also challenges in the delivery of these learning assistance packages due to the pandemic. The Second Semester will also usher in new ways of delivering student services through our virtual outlets with the goal of giving students a bridge of communication for any assistance that UP Mindanao can provide you. Rest assured that you are not alone in this journey. Our UP Mindanao administration, including your professors and instructors, are here to provide support and guidance. Please do not hesitate to let us know. We will be more than willing to assist you. On behalf of the UP Mindanao community, I wish you good health and a safe and productive semester.

Interested parties are invited to the 2021 International Mother Language Conference and Festival, opening 21 February and running until 20 March 2021. The UP Mindanao Department of Social Sciences is one of the assisting institutions. The 2021 International Mother Language Conference and Festival (#IMLCF21) takes on the challenges in the implementation of inclusive language education policy and examines the roles that institutions and stakeholders play in innovating and insulating solutions to ensure sustainable program implementation. The Covid-19 pandemic magnifies the problems affecting education systems across societies regardless of economic and political status. The systematic exclusion imposed upon societies coping with perennial economic challenges is heightened by the ongoing global health emergency. But while public policymaking is in a survival mode, continuity remains an imperative in rebuilding our systems and reimagining learning communities. This pandemic offers important lessons in rebuilding the need for diversity, engaged inclusion, and social equity. The Conference is a platform for researchers and practitioners of inclusionary multilingual, multicultural education to share their findings, insights, and recommendations with policymakers, administrators, and advocates in improving the quality of education.

Theme:

“Paglatas sa pandemya: Malig-on nga pagbangon ngadto sa bag-o nga panahon”

(Transcending the pandemic: A resilient recovery towards the new normal)

Amid a pandemic, we have been learning to build a stronger UP Mindanao. Having survived 2020, celebrating the 26th anniversary marks a renewed vigor in our lives. In our logo, the waling-waling and the leaf symbolize the new vitality rising from the stricken community, reflecting the academic community's supportive efforts. The leaf and petals are sturdy, depicting the Mindanaoan spirit. The number "2" is geometrically shaped, embodying structure and order. The logo also bears the colors of the University and that of a new morning sky.

Together, let us be resilient to recover and transcend the pandemic and move towards the dawn of a new normal.
