Regional Invention Contest & Exhibit, 2015

     The Department of Science and Technology-Region XI will be hosting the 2015 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE 2015) on October 1-3, 2015 at the Activity Area, Ground Floor, NCCC Mall in Matina, Davao City.
     Students and faculty members may visit the exhibits or submit entries for the College Category of the Sibol Competition and for the Creative Research Competition for faculty and professionals. The contest is for new and innovative projects or models that possess features and characteristics that may have significant contribution to the promotion of S&T innovations that are not contrary to public order, morals, public health, and welfare. Entries should be related to science, technology, engineering, medicine (non-biological/microbiological processes), health and environment. Winners will be awarded cash prizes up to P20,000.00 and will represent the region to the 2016 National Invention Contest and Expo (NICE) to be held in Manila next year.

Fiction contest in Bisaya, 2015

Fiction story writers who are residents of Mindanao are invited to compete in the 3rd Satur P. Apoyon Tigi sa Mubong Sugilanong Binisaya. A contestant may have only one (1) entry. The story should be original  (written by the contestant, in Bisaya/Binisaya), unpublished (not yet printed), and must not have won any awards or used as thesis or workshop material. The printed story must be from ten to twenty pages only (printed using Times New Roman font size 12 points on Letter-size paper with paragraphs printed in double-space). Send entry to: The Public Relations Officer, Administration Bldg., U.P. Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City 8022. The entry envelope should contain: three copies of the story; a separate paper signed by the contestant stating that he/she is the author, and that the story has not been published, awarded, or used as thesis or workshop material; and the contestant's mailing address, e-mail, and cellular phone number.  An electronic copy of the entry in Rich Text Format (RTF) should be sent by email to: davaowritersguild-at-yahoo-dot-com-dot-ph (). Non-compliant entries will be disqualified. The criteria are: Language (25%), Technique (25%), Relevance (25%), and Overall Impact (25%). Cash prizes are: P5,000.00; P3,000.00; and P2,000.00, with corresponding Certificates of Award. Winners will be notified. The decision of the judges is final. The deadline for submission is 09 November 2015. Awarding is on 21 November in Seda Hotel, Davao City. This contest is organized by the Davao Writers Guild.

Seminar-Workshop on Research Ethics, 2015

     WP 20150914 12 16 40 RichThe Office of Research organized a two-day seminar-workshop “Honor before Excellence: The Ethical and Responsible Conduct of Research” on 14 and 15 September 2015, at the CHSS-AVR, UP Mindanao. The seminar-workshop aims to educate researchers at the university on national ethical guidelines for research, particularly research involving human subjects.
     Dr. Marita V.T. Reyes, the chair of the National Ethics Committee of the Philippine National Health Research System, was the resource speaker for the seminar-workshop. Dr. Reyes is a well-respected scientist working in the field of cytogenetics, the study of chromosomes, and is a former faculty member, dean and chancellor of UP Manila, and once served as faculty regent of the UP Board of Regents.
     Dr. Reyes gave lectures on national laws and guidelines in research ethics, principles of good research practice, and responsibilities of stakeholders. Prof. Myfel Joseph Paluga, chair of the Department of Social Sciences also spoke on ethical considerations with research involving indigenous peoples.
     On day 2, Dr. Reyes talked about the ethical review process. Participants were enjoined to give inputs for the operationalization of ethics review in UP Mindanao.
     Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion, in her memorandum to faculty members, said, “This is the best time to craft our own ethical review process reflective of UP Mindanao’s requirements/needs.”
     This seminar-workshop is part of the R&D Capability Building Workshop Series 2015 conducted by the Office of Research, which aims to improve capabilities and processes in the university and, in the long run, increase research productivity. The event was made possible through the Academic Program Improvement (API) 2015 fund from the UP System.

September Public Affairs Calendar v.4, 2015

2015 090115 PUBLIC AFF CAL 4b     Public Affairs Calendar v.4 is published here to include new activities and anticipate upcoming events. September 11 is another occasion when UP President Alfredo Pascual will visit the UP Mindanao campus for the Launching and Inaugural Lecture of the UP Los Baños PhD in Development Studies Off-Campus Program in UP Mindanao. Also expected are UPLB Chancellor Fernando Sanchez, and UP Baguio Chancellor Raymundo Rovillos.

     Among the new calendar entries are: the Fire Safety Orientation and Drill on 14 Sept.; the deadline for submission of proposals for the Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant on 15 Sept.; the Gender Research Forum on 18 Sept.; the Gymnastics Workshop for cheerdance participants on 19 Sept.; the Launch of the 25th issue of Kritika Kultura at Ateneo de Manila, where "Loom of Dreams" by Prof. Gen Quintero is published, on 21 Sept.; and the Gender Sensitivity and HIV/AIDS Seminars on 28 September.   

     On 28-30 September, Professors Lilian de las Llagas, Grace Alfonso, and Lourdes Portus will be in UP Mindanao to facilitate a Direction-setting Workshop.    

     To date, the following activities and events have been undertaken:

     On 05 September was the start of the 10-day SEAMS (South East Asia Mathematical Society) School 2015-Modeling and Simulation for Environmental Phenomena in Indonesia with the participation of Asst. Prof. Rommel Real (Dept. of Math., Physics, and Comp. Sci.).
     On 4 September was the start of the month-long Young South-East Asian Leaders Institute (YSEALI) Fall 2015 Academic Fellowship on Civic Engagement at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (USA) with the participation of 4-BA Communication Arts student Christine Desiree Jodloman.
     On 6 September was the 1st “Oble Run”, a fun-run organized by the UP Mindanao Foundation to raise scholarship funds for deserving students, with 400-plus registered runners from various organizations and constituents of UP Mindanao and other UP constituent universities. Simultaneously, the Civil Service Commission held their fun-run to celebrate the 115th anniversary of the civil service where some 23 UP Mindanao employees participated.
