Prof. de Ungria re-appointed UP Artist, 2015

     Former chancellor, Prof. Ricardo de Ungria (Dept. of Humanities) was re-appointed as UP Artist I for Literary Arts for 2015-2017. This was disclosed by Prof. de Ungria through a letter from UP AVP for Academic Affairs Rhodora Azanza. The appointment was approved by the Board of Regents on their 27 August 2015 meeting. The Awarding Ceremonies were held on 28 August 2015. In her letter, AVP Azanza expressed her hope for Prof. de Ungria to continuously produce outstanding literary works.     

     On 29-30 August was the 7th Lit-Orgy, a spoken-word on-stage performance of creative writers of Davao City, held in a public-house in Bgy. Bangkal. Among the performers were UP Mindanao constituents Iyyah Sinarimbo, Oliver Ladaga, Darylle Rubino, Nina Alvarez, and Anne Mendoza, who performed before full-house audiences.

     On 05 September was the start of the 10-day SEAMS (South East Asia Mathematical Society) School 2015-Modeling and Simulation for Environmental Phenomena, in Indonesia, with the participation of Asst. Prof. Rommel Real (Dept. of Math., Physics, and Comp. Sci.).

     On 4 September was the start of the month-long Young South-East Asian Leaders Institute (YSEALI) Fall 2015 Academic Fellowship on Civic Engagement at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (USA) with the participation of 4-BA Communication Arts student Christine Desiree Jodloman.

     On 6 September was the 1st “Oble Run”, a fun-run organized by the UP Mindanao Foundation to raise scholarship funds for deserving students, with 400-plus registered runners from various organizations, among whom were constituents of UP Mindanao and other UP constituent universities. Simultaneously, the Civil Service Commission held their fun-run to celebrate the 115th anniversary of the civil service where some 23 UP Mindanao employees participated.

Faculty Regent holds Consultation Dialogue, 2015

Faculty Regent Philip Ian P. Padilla visited UP Mindanao on 02 September for a consultation with the faculty members. The faculty units represented were the Departments of Humanities, Social Science, Human Kinetics, Biological Science, Food Technology, Math and Computer Science, and the School of Management. Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion welcomed Regent Padilla to his second visit, recalling his first at the 18th Commencement last June. Academic Affairs OIC Nilo Oponda gave the context of the forum as being among the functions of the Regent. Regent Padilla adopted the question-and-answer format for a free-wheeling discussion and expressed his hope of being able to answer any and all queries based on policies of the UP Board of Regents and any other clarifications on issues applicable to UP Mindanao. 

 

BS Comp. Sci. alumnus is part of winning AngelHack team, 2015

     UP Mindanao alumnus Tim A. Duhaylungsod Jr. (BS Computer Science 2014) was part of the winning team of the 2nd Angel Hackathon in Davao City. Below is an excerpt from the news article from Sun Star Davao issue of 24 August 2015.    

     "Davao app developer off to Silicon Valley

     THE second Angel Hackathon (AngelHack) Davao 2015 winning mobile application, HopChat, will represent Davao City in the annual Global Demo Day in Silicon Valley.
     HopChat, developed by a group composed of Davao-based IT professionals, is an application where one can send SMS from one phone to the next without wifi, Bluetooth or even telecommunication intermediaries.
     The two-day AngelHack concluded last August 16 at the PLDT-Smart Business Center on Bangoy St. in Davao City.
     The group is comprised of Eric Clark Su as the product developer, Tim A. Duhaylungsod Jr. (technical lead), Inaki Narciso (Android lead), Mark Valles (IOS developer) and Kevin Ladan (Android developer).
     More than 20 competing teams participated in this year's AngelHack. The HopChat team will undergo the AngelHack Accelerator Program where they will be mentored for 12 weeks before bringing them out to Silicon Valley to raise investment and introduce them to incubators."

Alumnus Errol Merquita wins a 1st Prize in Palanca, 2015

Picture3b     UP Mindanao alumnus Errol A. Merquita (BA Social Science 2002) won a 1st Prize in the 2015 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the country’s most prestigious literary awards.  Mr. Merquita won in the Tula Para sa mga Bata Category for "Ang Iisang Paa Ng Tsinelas".
     This is Mr. Merquita's second Palanca Award, having won 2nd Prize in 2011 in the Short Story in Cebuano Category for “Isla Verde”, named after an area in Davao City populated by marginalized indigenous peoples. In 2010, he won 2nd Prize in the Bisaya Fiction Writing Contest of the Davao Writers Guild for his story “Kinsa ang Nagpatay sa Pari sa Calinan?” (in file photo).

September Public Affairs Calendar v.4, 2015

2015 090115 PUBLIC AFF CAL 4b     September 2015 in U.P. Mindanao is the second month of classes for Academic Year 2015-2016.
   To promote physical well-being and to raise funds for student scholarships and faculty development, the UP Mindanao Foundation and the Dept. of Human Kinetics holds the "Óblê Run" fun-run on 6 September, 5:30 A.M. at Victoria Plaza Parking Lot.
     In the business of research is the "Forum on Ethical and Responsible Conduct of Research" on 14-15 September.
     Faculty members will make research presentations in the "12th International Sago Symposium" in Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan, and the "Ecohydrology 2015-International Conference" in Paris, France, and participate in the "Symposium on Market Access for Small Farmers" in Thailand.
     Upcoming academic events co-organized by U.P. Mindanao are the "Conference of Mindanao Literature Teachers" on 22-23 September in the Mintal, Davao City campus, and the "National Symposium on Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Bioresources for Sustainable Development" on 24-26 September in General Santos City that will culminate in the launch of the Phil Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology-Mindanao Chapter.
     U.P. Mindanao, likewise, joins in the celebration of the 115th Year of the Philippine Civil Service throughout the month of September.

     Public Affairs Calendar v.4 is published here to include new activities and anticipate upcoming events. September 11 is another occasion when UP President Alfredo Pascual will visit the UP Mindanao campus for the Launching and Inaugural Lecture of the UP Los Baños PhD in Development Studies Off-Campus Program in UP Mindanao. Also expected are UPLB Chancellor Fernando Sanchez, and UP Baguio Chancellor Raymundo Rovillos.

     Among the new calendar entries are: the Fire Safety Orientation and Drill on 14 Sept.; the deadline for submission of proposals for the Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant on 15 Sept.; the Gender Research Forum on 18 Sept.; the Gymnastics Workshop for cheerdance participants on 19 Sept.; the Launch of the 25th issue of Kritika Kultura at Ateneo de Manila, where "Loom of Dreams" by Prof. Gen Quintero is published, on 21 Sept.; and the Gender Sensitivity and HIV/AIDS Seminars on 28 September.   

     On 28-30 September, Professors Lilian de las Llagas, Grace Alfonso, and Lourdes Portus will be in UP Mindanao to facilitate a Direction-setting Workshop.
