Land Reservations' 25th Anniversary

The UP Land Reservations in Laak and Marilog had their 25th-anniversary milestone in June 2023.

President Fidel V. Ramos signed Presidential Proclamations 1252 and 1253, creating the UP Laak Land Reservation and the UP Marilog Land Reservation on June 15, 1998, upon the recommendation of the Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

PP 1252 set aside 2,800 hectares in Laak, in present-day Davao de Oro Province, for "research, extension, instruction purposes, forest rehabilitation and protection, biodiversity conservation, crops and livestock production and management, including upland communities training and development center."

PP 1253, on the other hand, proclaimed 4,100 hectares in Marilog for similar purposes in addition to "watershed and forest rehabilitation and protection."

UP leads and participates in their socioeconomic development. Both land reservations are presently parts of ancestral domains, as well.

UP Land Reservation Manager Joel Sagadal recalled these milestones in his visit to Special Barangay Talle in Davao del Oro Province on June 15, 2023.

"UP Los Banos Alumni Association Davao President Luciano 'Sonny' Puyod II suggested the Laak area to then-UP President Emil Javier," he said.

The local communities welcomed UP's arrival because basic education was their urgent need. Consequently, the newly-created UP Ugnayan ng Pahinungod's Gurong Pahinungod volunteer teachers were deployed to Laak. Today, the pilot schools established in the Laak reservation have grown, and some former pupils have become teachers.

The communities in both Laak and Marilog are likewise experiencing economic opportunities and sustainable development. The resident Dibabawon and the Obu-Manuvu indigenous and migrant communities in Laak and Marilog are engaged in sustainable agriculture, livestock-growing, food processing, and contract-growing for an international market.

In 2017, UP Mindanao's efforts were recognized with a Gawad Pangulo Award for Excellence in Public Service for "Economic Upliftment of the Indigenous People's Community through Agricultural Projects" in the UP Marilog Land Reservation.

The issuance of the presidential proclamations is proving to be wise action in the UP Laak and Marilog Land Reservations.

UP Mindanao’s Strategic Plan for 2022-2025 gains backing as the Regional Development Council (RDC) XI passes “Resolution No. 22, Series of 2023,” supporting the implementation of the plan within the Davao Region.

The RDC-XI, which oversees the social and economic development of the Davao Region, passed the resolution titled “Enjoining the Stakeholders’ Support to the University of the Philippines Mindanao Strategic Plan 2022-2025 Implementation in Davao Region” during their CY 2023 1st Quarter Full Council Meeting in Mati City, Davao Oriental on 24 March 2023.

The RDC-XI is currently chaired by Davao Oriental Governor Cora Malanyaon.

The UPMin Strategic Plan for 2022 - 2025 is a product of a series of consultations with internal and external stakeholders. It contains strategies for Mindanao's educational and socio-economic improvement. The Plan coincides with the RDC XI’s social and economic duties outlined in the Davao Region Development Plan 2023-2028. These are to boost health, improve education and lifelong learning, increase income-earning ability, ensure food security and proper nutrition, modernize agriculture and agribusiness, and advance research and development, technology, and innovation.

Furthermore, UPMin is targeting certain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its Strategic Plan: Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and Partnership for the Goals.

The RDC-XI's show of support for UP Mindanao’s plans is evidence that the University is taking strides to contribute to developing Mindanao.

UP Mindanao is mandated to develop academic programs and produce graduates who will serve Mindanao. It has a duty to assist cultural communities and coordinate with other organizations for Mindanao development. In line with this, UPMin has recently introduced additional programs such as the Associate of Arts in Sports Studies, the Bachelor of Science in Data Science, and the MS in Human Movement Science. UPMin will offer medical, engineering, and other academic degree programs soon.

UPCAT applicants await their Test Permits

The University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) served 1,138 applicants in the simultaneous nationwide delivery of the UP College Admission Test 2024 (UPCAT 2024) on June 3-4, 2023, the first after the pandemic. UPMin was the designated UPCAT Test Center in Davao City and one of 100-plus nationwide.

Applicants from Davao Region and other Mindanao provinces claimed their UPCAT Test Permits from the UPMin Office of the University Registrar (OUR) from June 2-4, 2023, and took the test on the weekend. UPCAT qualifiers will gain admission to one of the nine UP constituent universities in Academic Year 2024-2025.

UPMin, the only UP constituent university in Mindanao, offers the following undergraduate degree programs: BS Agribusiness Economics, BS Anthropology, BS Applied Mathematics, BS Architecture, BS Biology, BA Communication and Media Arts, BS Computer Science, BS Data Science, BA English, BS Food Technology,  Bachelor in Sports Science,  and one Associate program.

In addition, the UPMin Test Center expanded access to the UPCAT by accommodating last-minute walk-in applicants even after the application deadline.

“We accommodated an additional 131 walk-in applicants on June 2-4, 2023, from within and outside the Davao Region,” said UPMin University Registrar Karen Joyce Cayamanda.

“The walk-in applicants came from the pre-UPCAT campaign we held in the remote Marilog District, Davao City, and through our publicity materials and public relations efforts,” she said.

UPMin’s Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and the Office of Extension and Community Service (OECS) assisted the OUR and the UP Office of Admissions in further widening access to UP education by delivering affirmative action in assisting applicants and facilitating applications for high school students in far-flung communities in Davao and other Mindanao regions. These efforts address the sustainable goal of quality education, leading to other sustainable development goals for Mindanao.
